What should not be put in a Cover Letter

The article outlines tips of what you should not do when drafting your cover letter.

  • Do not write all the information in a cover letter, keep it short and straight to the point
  • Avoid typos and grammatical errors. Employers receive huge volumes of application letters as such they do not have time to spend on a cover letter that has typos. Spell check all your application details before submitting them. There are software’s which are available online which are meant for spell checks always take advantage of them. You can give someone to proofread your cover letter before submitting it. It is normal for people not to see the grammatical errors in their own work, so it is always important to give someone to proofread for you before submitting. That someone can be a friend, career coach, supervisor or anyone whom you can trust
  • Do not put jargon or vague words in your cover letter, use simple English which is straight to the point
  • Do not put your whole resume into your cover letter, rather reword and summarize the information. Keep your cover letter short and straight to the point.
  • Minimize the use of “I”, Avoid using phrases that starts with I such as “I am”, “I will”, “I had” and “I believe” because they only focus on you, they are egocentric. It is not about you rather it is about how can work together with the new employer to meet the objectives of the new work. Try to replace phrases that start with “I”.
  • Do not put your salary expectations in a cover letter if you not asked to do so as they may ruin your chances of being shortlisted and because of that you may end up being given fewer salary than the one for that specific job function
  • Do not talk about other job applications when you are applying. Convince the employer that you are really interested in that particular job position that you are applying for.
