Background

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation mandated with the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. At present, IRENA has 168 Members (167 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 16 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged. IRENA supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy. The Agency implements its mandate with the view to sustainable development, increased energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.

IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) is responsible for the provision of the means for an accelerated renewable energy technology uptake, considering national conditions of resource endowment, social and economic frameworks. In accordance with the IRENA Statute, activities in this field include analysis of renewable energy technology policies; dissemination of information and increased awareness; technologies and equipment overview and assessment of success-failure factors; improved pertinent knowledge and technology transfer, and joint RD&D and provision of information about the development and deployment of national and international technical standards in relation to renewable energy.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Senior Programme Officer in the Remap team, the Programme Officer will:

  • Lead development and implementation of bioenergy projects.
  • Conduct assessments of bioenergy resource potential in different countries and regions.
  • Evaluate the economic merits, market potential and resource basis of different bioenergy technologies, including technologies for cooking, heating and cooling of buildings, industrial process heat, power and transport fuel.
  • Process and write information collected in the course of assisting countries upon request to develop bioenergy scale up strategies.
  • Organise workshops; liaise with external experts and organizations; and coordinate of peer review of bioenergy studies.
  • Prepare reports and brochures for publication, prepare the communication plan and ensure such are disseminated through relevant outlets including social media.
  • Assist in mobilising and managing Voluntary Contributions.
  • Prepare summaries, information sheets, and PowerPoint presentations, and interact with relevant stakeholders as required.
  • Perform other tasks to assist the bioenergy team and the IRENA Secretariat in the completion of the work programme as required, including some related administrative tasks.

Qualifications

Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in energy, engineering, environmental, energy economics, natural science, or a related field.

Experience/Skills: A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in bioenergy resource mapping and systems analysis, as well as in assessment of economic and environmental constraints on bioenergy development is required. Knowledge of technologies for bioenergy production and policies for bioenergy deployment is required. Familiarity with data, information systems, models and mapping software related to biomass potential and the factors that affect it such as land, climate, soil, water, and management skills is required. Experience of working in an international and intergovernmental organization is required. 

Languages: Excellent command of written and spoken English is a must. Knowledge of other UN languages would be an asset.
