Exams Director Southern Cluster, Sub Saharan Africa

Role Purpose

The purpose of this role is to set the three-year Exams strategy and deliver income and surplus for the Southern Exams cluster, SSA, aligning with Global and Regional Exams strategy. The lead is ultimately responsible for overall team management, team and business performance, customer experience and reputation with a primary focus on leading business development to maximise market opportunities and create value, working collaboratively with other BC colleagues on shared interests/ mutual opportunities, ensure compliance with British Council and awarding body standards, and add value to customer and partner relationships

Role specific knowledge and experience:

The main essential knowledge and experience points that we are looking for you to evidence are:

  • English Proficiency (Level C1)
  • University Degree or relevant qualification  
  • Extensive experience managing a large-scale commercial business across a number of different countries/geographies
  • Operating in international and multi-cultural organisations
  • Building relationships at all levels of the organisation
  • Responsible for cluster performance, customer experience and reputation
  • Initiative to perform successfully in a rapidly changing environment

Pay Band – 8

Contract Duration – 3-year fixed term contract with possibility of 1 year extension based on mutual agreement  

Contract Type – 

Locally Engaged – If the candidate is currently located in South Africa or Zimbabwe.  

International Transfer – If the candidate is outside of South Africa or Zimbabwe, candidate is eligible for International Transfer into Zimbabwe. This role is open to all applicants including those who need to relocate to undertake the role. Candidates who do not have a natural right to work in the country will be provided with immigration clearance and visa support.  Please note Visa approvals are beyond the British Council’s control so any job offer will be subject to securing the required right to work. Relocation support as set out in the British Council international relocation policy is available.

Long Term Strategic International Assignment – If an internal candidate is currently on an International Assignment, they will remain on International assignment terms and be based in Zimbabwe (LTSIA). This role can be offered on long-term strategic international assignment terms which includes visa and transfer support and benefits such as assignment allowances, housing and utilities, and schooling. Please note Visa approvals are beyond the British Council’s control so any job offer will be subject to securing the required right to work. 

The full International Assignment package is offered at the discretion of the British Council and may not be available to candidates who are currently already based in another location but have significant connections to the host location. Applications for locally hired candidates are welcome but if successful will not qualify for the international assignment package and will continue on local terms and conditions of service.

Location – The postholder can be based in South Africa or Zimbabwe – dependent on contract type  

Requirements – All applicants should have a pre-existing legal status to live and work in country of application.  The British Council will not facilitate/sponsor visa applications and work permits.
