Overview

The UNFCCC Secretariat is hiring a consultancy job opportunity at Review Subdivision, Adaptation Division. If you are for an international consultancy job opportunity this is for you!

The Adaptation division of the UNFCCC secretariat supports the intergovernmental process. This
process includes activities relating to national adaptation plans, national adaptation programmes of
action (NAPAs), the Nairobi work programme (NWP), the work programme on loss and damage, the
work of the Adaptation Committee, the work programme of the LDC Expert Group (LEG), the work on
Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP), research and systematic observation
under the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA), and support for the
implementation of adaptation action under the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and the Paris
Agreement.


The Response subdivision, under the Adaptation division of the secretariat, consists of two entities, the
LEG and NAP Unit and the Loss and Damage Unit.The COP established the Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage associated with Climate Change Impacts (Warsaw International Mechanism) and its Executive Committee (WIM Excom) at COP19.

The Warsaw International Mechanism is the main vehicle under the UNFCCC process to avert, minimize and address loss and damage associated with impacts of climate change, including extreme events and slow onset events, in developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change.

The consultancy job opportunity role


The consultant will support the work of the WIM Excom and its expert groups, including the organizations of meetings and events that are held in the context of their work. The contractor will report to the Team Lead for the L&D Unit.


What will you be doing
1) Carries out technical research on loss and damage (L&D) to support the work of the ExCom,
including its expert groups, as well as activities under the Santiago Network. Specific
activities include:
a. Compiling information on a range of climate risk management approaches and practices
undertaken at local, national and regional levels to address impacts related to a range of specific
climate hazards;
b. Undertake background research, and as needed, analyse and synthesize information, on
technical assistance of relevant organizations, and provide applicable inputs to official
documents and other knowledge products
c. Presenting the compiled information in multiple formats;


2) Contributes to the preparation of written outputs
a. Draft background papers, analytical notes, and technical documents;
b. Draft sections of reports and publications of the ExCom and its expert groups;
c. Supports maintenance of web pages related to the work on loss and damage, including
making available outputs from the implementation of the workplans of the ExCom and its
expert groups;
3) Contributes to the organization of the meetings of the ExCom and its expert groups, and
related events;
4) Performs other related duties required to achieve the goals and objectives of the L&D Unit,
the Adaptation Division and the Secretariat.

Timeline Completion date
1 Support the preparation of technical materials as part of the implementation of the 2nd five-year rolling workplan of the ExCom and the Plans of Action of the expert groups throughout the contractual period
2 Support the maintenance of dedicated webpages of the thematic expert groups; support the publication and dissemination of the reports and other explanatory outputs; support the preparation of
meeting documents.Throughout the contractual period and as per the dates of the meetings of the expert groups (exact dates tbc)
3 Support the preparation and organization of the 18th meeting of the ExCom and the first meetings of the year of the expert groups 31 March 2023
4 Support the preparation of outreach and communication materials, including through drafting, co-creating and presenting contents; assist in the organization and servicing of events
organized by the L&D team Throughout the contractual period.

Timeframe
Estimated time for assignment: as soon as possible for six months (80 days). The days and number of hours to be worked will vary depending on the work volume.

Duty station
Preferably at the UNFCCC premises.


What we are looking for:
• Advanced university degree in social, environmental or natural sciences or a related discipline.
• At least two (2) years of professional experience relevant to climate change adaptation, development
assistance, sustainable development, or disaster risk management, and associated international
and national governance and regulatory systems.
• Familiarity with the UNFCCC process, and with the concepts of climate-resilience, transformational
and/or ecosystem-based adaptation, is an asset.
• Very strong analytical and drafting skills as well as good planning and organizing skills.
• Fluency in English (both oral and written).
• Working proficiency in other UN languages is an asset.
