GIZ is looking for dedicated nerds and geeks who want to help overcome the digital divide as development workers (digital ambassadors) in Rwanda, Namibia, Ghana, Cameroon and other countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Field of activity

Do you want to help reduce the digital divide in Africa and thus actively shape the local digital transformation? Would you like to advise communal multimedia centers or youth clubs in Cameroon, improve web platforms or geographic information systems, set up a makerspace in a remote African village? Are you familiar with mesh networks and Raspberry Pi? Or with social media and data privacy? Then you are right with GIZ!

GIZ Digital Ambassador initiative aims to provide disadvantaged groups, communities and civil society organizations in Africa with better access to and use of the latest digital technologies. In this way, more people should benefit from the opportunities of digitization. In particular, the initiative promotes access to the Internet in rural areas, digital skills (digital literacy) among women, girls and young people and digital support for democratic processes.

Digital Ambassadors are mediators between the digital world, the digital ecosystems and the realities on site, who use peer-to-peer approaches to develop innovative solutions to bridge the digital divide between town and country, rich and poor or men and women ( co-)develop and promote their scaling.

Your tasks

  • The tasks of the digital ambassadors are derived from the specific needs on site
  • They can lie in the teaching of basic digital skills, in the development of easily accessible digital information channels, in the area of ​​the entrepreneur and start-up scene, digitization in vocational training or in the design of concepts for NGOs that campaign online for democratic use participation
  • Missions can also relate to the challenge of finding innovative solutions to access the internet where broadband does not exist or for those who do not own a smartphone with flat rate data
  • Digital ambassadors often work in a team with complementary skills and always together with local partners, with whom they design and develop the solutions together

your profile

  • University degree or professional qualification related to digital change (social, political or economic sciences, social work, pedagogy, media, ICT, engineering or comparable)
  • Affinity to the field of digital transformation, combined with initial practical work experience (possibly also within the framework of qualified internships accompanying your studies) and initial experience in the field of development cooperation/international cooperation
  • Proven IT/ICT knowledge and experience and understanding of IT developments and IT/ICT projects
  • Knowledge of the promotion of “digital literacy” and consulting approaches to information and communication technologies as well as an interest in cooperation/interface management and process design/design
  • Experience abroad, if possible in Africa, and experience of working in intercultural contexts
  • Sensitivity to or experience with approaches to equal rights for men and women
  • Teamwork and networking skills combined with the talent to think conceptually and analytically as well as a structured working style with a high degree of self-organization, flexibility and creativity
  • Very good knowledge of English and French (depending on location), knowledge of German an advantage
