Data Scientist

SEI HQ is looking for an enthusiastic Data Scientist with strong analytical skills to join our Trase initiative and work within a dynamic team of experts, helping to leverage our capacity to identify, allocate and communicate the environmental, economic and social impacts as a result of agricultural commodity production globally propagated through international commodity supply chains.

Join our international non-profit research organization and help create a sustainable, prosperous future for all! SEI HQ is a dynamic and expanding workplace that employs around 130 people from 28 different nationalities in an activity-based office in central Stockholm (Garnisonen), with an additional 170 employees in centres around the world.

Trase (Intelligence for Sustainable Trade, www.trase.earth ) is a pioneering sustainability data and intelligence initiative that reveals the connections between consumers, producers and investors, as well as the environmental and social impacts linked to global supply chains. The Trase approach draws on vast sets of production, trade, customs and financial data, for the first time laying bare the flows of globally traded commodities such as palm oil, soya, beef and cocoa at scale, as well as the flows of capital used to finance this trade.

Trase is a direct response to the ambitious commitments made by leaders across sectors to achieve deforestation-free supply chains and the urgent need this creates for a breakthrough in assessing and monitoring sustainability performance. Trase is widely recognized by industry, government and civil society leaders as a game-changing innovation in supply chain transparency and is jointly led by SEI and Global Canopy with many additional partners and close collaborators. The Trase team is made up of over 30 individuals located in nine countries brought together by enthusiasm, curiosity and drive.

The Data Scientist role

Are you interested in working in an international setting with people from diverse backgrounds to tackle major environmental and sustainability challenges? SEI HQ is looking for an enthusiastic person with strong analytical skills to work within a dynamic team of experts, helping to leverage our capacity to identify, allocate and communicate the environmental, economic and social impacts as a result of agricultural commodity production globally propagated through international commodity supply chains.

You will be joining the Trase partnerships (www.trase.earth ) and the Spatial Intelligence Team that is expanding to respond to a growing demand for spatial data and analyses linked to tropical deforestation and conversion to commodity production and supply chains.

Together with the high-resolution mapping of agricultural commodity supply chains, Trase also releases metrics on deforestation, emissions, production and zero-deforestation commitments by companies and governments.

The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include maintaining up-to-date data on supply chain impacts across Trase’s priority commodities (soy, beef, corn, palm oil, cocoa and wood pulp), developing new methods to link impacts to production and trade and creating actionable insights from our data while also helping to build strategic partnerships and ensure uptake and impact by making our data accessible to users.

You will work in collaboration with experts across the Trase Supply Chain Mapping, Research, Data Products and Impact teams, as well as in-country experts and partners in commodity producing countries in South America, Africa and Southeast Asia.

You will be part of a leading, multinational, multidisciplinary, and multilingual team of experts, working across the Trase partnership while also delivering on an exciting and fun project! We value diversity, inclusivity and creativity at the core of what we do and we welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds.
