Are you passionate about driving sustainable development, innovation, and collaboration within Africa’s bioeconomy sector? Do you possess expertise, experience, and a commitment to advancing specific thematic areas such as aquatic resources, agriculture, healthcare, industry, policy, governance, and business development? If so, BioCA invite you to join the specialized working groups of the Bioeconomy Coalition of Africa (BioCA) and contribute to transformative change across the continent.

About the Bioeconomy Coalition of Africa (BioCA)

The BioCA is a dynamic platform that unites scientists, policymakers, media representatives, industry leaders, development partners, investors, and civil society stakeholders to harness the potential of Africa’s bioeconomy for sustainable growth and prosperity. Through collaboration, innovation, and knowledge-sharing, the BioCA addresses pressing challenges and unlocks opportunities in key bioeconomy domains.

Working Groups

The BioCA is establishing six specialized working groups focused on the following thematic areas:

1. Blue Bioeconomy (Aquatic Resources): The aquatic realm holds vast untapped potential for sustainable economic growth and biodiversity conservation. Addressing challenges and opportunities in fisheries, aquaculture, and marine biotechnology demands focused interdisciplinary efforts. The Blue Bioeconomy working group aims to facilitate research, policy advocacy, and industry partnerships to harness the wealth of aquatic resources sustainably.
2. Green Bioeconomy (Agriculture and Forestry): Agriculture and forestry are fundamental pillars of Africa’s bioeconomy, providing livelihoods for millions and critical ecosystem services. This working group will focus on enhancing productivity, resilience, and value addition across agricultural and forest-based value chains.
3. Red Bioeconomy (Healthcare Applications): Leveraging Africa’s rich biodiversity and healthcare needs, the Red Bioeconomy working group aims to advance bio-based solutions for healthcare. Research, development, and deployment of biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and medical technologies will be central to its mandate.
4. White Bioeconomy (Industry; Bioenergy and Biomaterials): Industrial applications of bioresources, including bioenergy and biomaterials, hold significant promise for sustainable industrialization and climate mitigation. This working group will focus on promoting innovation, investment, and policy frameworks conducive to the growth of bio-based industries.
5. Policy and Governance: Effective policy frameworks and governance structures are essential enablers for the sustainable development of Africa’s bioeconomy. The Policy and Governance working group will engage in policy analysis, advocacy, and capacity building to support evidence-based decision-making.
6. Business Development: To unlock the full potential of Africa’s bioeconomy, robust business development strategies and partnerships are imperative. The Business Development working group will focus on fostering entrepreneurship, access to finance, market linkages, and technology transfer.

Call for Applications

BioCA is seeking motivated individuals with expertise and a passion for driving positive change to join its working groups. Each person may only be part of one working group to ensure focused engagement and maximum impact.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be assessed based on the following criteria:

• Citizen of an African country, or living/working/studying in Africa
• Expertise and experience relevant to the selected working group’s thematic area
• Demonstrated commitment to advancing sustainable development goals and fostering collaboration
• Potential for impactful contributions and innovative solutions
• Diversity of perspectives and backgrounds to ensure inclusive representation

• Announcement of Selected Candidates: August 23^rd, 2024
• Inaugural Working Group Meetings: August 30^th, 2024
