The UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme is looking for a Remote International Consultant: Apply Now!

The UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme is looking for an international consultant to update and revise the “World Heritage in Young Hands Educational Resource Kit”

Background

The UNESCO World Heritage Education Programme gives young people a chance to voice their concerns and to become involved in the protection of its common cultural and natural heritage. It seeks to encourage and enable tomorrow’s decision-makers to participate in heritage conservation and to respond to the continuing threats facing the World Heritage, through diverse activities and tools. Developed in 1998, the “World Heritage in Young Hands Educational Resource Kit” for secondary school teachers is one of the main tools of the World Heritage Education Programme. It aims to sensitize young people to the importance of preserving their local, national and world heritage. The Kit was developed based on an interactive and interdisciplinary approach. It offers adaptable ideas for teaching World Heritage and seeks to incorporate World Heritage values into the curriculum as a way of delivering core subjects and transverse themes both in the classroom and through extra-curricular activities. https://whc.unesco.org/en/educationkit/

The Kit has been warmly welcomed by States Parties to the Convention, heritage practitioners and teachers around the world and has been translated into more than 40 national language versions. While the Kit is still used in practice worldwide, its contents urgently need to be revised and updated to reflect the development and evolution of the 1972 Convention and World Heritage’s contribution to sustainable development and transformative learning in the context of the UN Agenda 2030.

The update of the Kit is the core of an overarching project which focuses on capacity-building of youth and teachers, adaptation of the Kit to e-learning modules, and an action-oriented advocacy campaign for schools. The project’s co-creative approach is guided by the new UNESCO Framework for Culture and Arts Education. In this regard, the international consultant will work under the overall authority of the Chief of the Policy and Statutory Meetings Unit at the World Heritage Centre (WHC) and under the direct supervision of the World Heritage Education Programme team and in collaboration with other units at WHC as required, to prepare a complete and comprehensive update of Kit, by assuming the tasks described below.

  • Draft/revise and create 30 student activity sheets in accordance with the chapters of the KIT in consultation with teachers and educational experts from the UNESCO Associated Schools Network.
  • Prepare an introductory section of the Kit, including a short summary, foreword, introduction, how to use the Kit, bibliography, glossary, and resource material.
  • Draft the content for 10-15 case studies in the form of impact stories to be featured alongside the Kit

3. Integration of comments after the international peer-review process:

  • Analyze received comments and feedback.
