Overview
As one of its contributions to global development, each academic year KU Leuven selects exceptional scholars from institutions in the Global South as scholarship candidates to study for a PhD at the largest university in Belgium. The KU Leuven Global Minds Programme is managed by the University’s Interfaculty Council for Global Development.
The aim of the KU Leuven Global Minds Doctoral Scholarships Programme (GM Scholarship) is to give scholars the opportunity to carry out 4 years of PhD research in a ‘sandwich’ system, which means that a maximum of 50% of the research will be financed by and carried out at KU Leuven, while at least 50% will be carried out and financed by the scholar’s home institution, supported by a local co-supervisor. In this way, both KU Leuven and the home institution are partners in the co-financing of the research. In addition, KU Leuven offers a supervision allowance to the local co-supervisor at the home institution and to the supervisor at KU Leuven.
Candidates must be assigned by the home institution and receive sufficient financial support from that institution to carry out the research effectively. This ensures that the candidate is strongly embedded in the home country and can contribute to local capacity building after the PhD. The PhD degree will be awarded by KU Leuven.
The GM Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding proposals that address a development-related research topic, preferably linked to one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals. After obtaining their doctorate at KU Leuven, the doctoral candidates are expected to mobilise their expertise at the university in their home country in order to contribute to strengthening the capacity of that institution.
Eligibility
- The applicant must be a national and resident of one of the countries included in this list.
- Applicants holding EU citizenship will not be selected. The same applies to applicants with a long-term EU residence permit.
- The candidate’s most recent Master’s degree must have been awarded no more than ten years ago, i.e. not before 2015.
- The candidate must have obtained an academic grade equivalent to High Distinction or higher. Degrees awarded with a grade equivalent to Second Class Second/Lower Division will not be considered.
- The research project must be of excellent academic quality, with particular emphasis on the development relevance of the proposal.
- The research project must have a clear time frame indicating how the research periods at KU Leuven and at the home institution will alternate (a maximum period of 12 months at the home institution should alternate with a maximum period of 12 months at KU Leuven).
- The candidate must be formally affiliated with a university in the home country. If the candidate does not yet have such an affiliation, she/he is eligible to apply for this scholarship programme, but the scholarship will only be awarded once such an affiliation has been obtained.
- The applicant’s home institution must provide evidence of sufficient financial support for the doctoral project, guaranteeing that the candidate will receive financial resources through a fully funded full-time position, including social security coverage similar to that of staff at the same level and with the same qualifications in the home institution. The home institution must also guarantee in writing that the candidate will be able to devote sufficient time to the doctoral project during the periods spent at the home institution
