Call for Applications: Fully remote Chapter Scientists to support the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities open to Global South Countries

Overview

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is in the process of preparing the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities to be delivered in the first quarter of 2027. In this call for applications, Working Group II (WG II) is seeking highly motivated individuals from developing countries to apply as Chapter Scientist to support author teams for the Special Report. The position will be remunerated, with support for travel to all Lead Author Meetings. These are IPCC meetings that convene the Report’s Coordinating Lead Authors (CLAs), Lead Authors (LAs), Review Editors (RE), and Chapter Scientist to work on preparing the Report. This will be a great opportunity for researchers to get involved with the IPCC process.

Role Description

Chapter Scientist will be assigned to one of the Special Report Chapters, and successful applicants will be
required to work under the general rules and procedures of the IPCC. Chapter Scientists will be acknowledged in the IPCC report. Chapter Scientist role will be fully remote on a contract for services at the WGII Technical Support Unit based in Singapore Management University. Chapter Scientist will not be employees of IPCC, or IPCC Working Group II Technical Support Unit and will be expected to work from their home institutions (if applicable) or be based in a country where they have legal standing to work independently.

Understanding the constraints and barriers to participation of developing country researchers, this funding is being provided by the Working Group II Technical Support Unit for developing country Chapter Scientist only. Chapter Scientists from Global South countries for the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities will be contracted until December 2026. Chapter Scientist contracted for this program will receive support for travel and subsistence for their participation in Lead Author Meetings including equipment and IT support.
