Job description

The Global Carbon Market (GCM) project assists public sector decision-makers around the world in implementing and using market-based instruments in their national climate action projects and plans (nationally determined contributions (NDCs), long-term strategies, climate change policies and legislation). With studies, capacity-building activities and pilot programmes, the project also supports the strategic development of new instruments for cooperative approaches under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

It likewise promotes private sector involvement in the development and implementation of market-based solutions and advises both public authorities and private enterprise on the potential benefits of market-based instruments to mitigate climate change. Other project components include the provision of training to prepare government representatives in the partner countries for the climate change negotiations and providing support for regional cooperation in the carbon market. Countries involved partner countries in Eastern Africa, Caribbean region and Southeast Asia.

Your tasks

As an Intern at the Global Carbon Markets you will be responsible for the following tasks during your GIZ internship:

  • You support the team with research task and the preparation of relevant information on the topics of international climate policy and digitalization with a focus on market-based climate protection mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
  • You will support the organization and implementation of international conferences, workshops and other (online) events, e. g. support in organizing and implementing capacity building workshops and conferences.
  • You will support the team with regard to project management and administrative activities, e. g. organizing and taking minutes of meetings and support in developing a knowledge management system.
  • In the context of public relations, you will support the team in editing and creating presentations and communication materials.

Intern at the Global Carbon Markets Profile

  • You are a student in the field of environmental, political, social and economic sciences or in another relevant subject related to climate and environmental issues and/or international politics.
  • You have acquired initial relevant expertise or work experience in the field of international climate policy, climate negotiations and the Paris Agreement; previous knowledge in the field of environmental economics, carbon pricing pricing and market-based climate protection instruments, in particular Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, as well as digitalization is an advantage.
  • You are interested in the topics of international cooperation; initial work experience, especially in developing and emerging countries, is an advantage.
  • You have very good organizational and communication skills.
  • You have initial experience in project management and the planning and organization of events.
  • You are willing to work in a team and take on short-term assignments.
  • Your English skills are fluent, German skills are a plus.
  • You have knowledge of MS Office (especially Word, PowerPoint, Excel, MS Teams) and ideally virtual communication platforms.
