Organizational Context
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The mission of UNIDO, as described in the Lima Declaration adopted at the fifteenth session of the UNIDO General Conference in 2013 as well as the Abu Dhabi Declaration adopted at the eighteenth session of UNIDO General Conference in 2019, is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) in Member States.
The Directorate of SDG Innovation and Economic Transformation (IET), headed by a Managing Director, is responsible for the development of innovative UNIDO services in the areas of agro-industry and agribusiness, sustainability standards and fair production, and climate-relevant or climate-improving technologies. It is also, in collaboration with Office of the Director General, responsible for developing innovative technical cooperation concepts, identifying new sources and means of finance and entering into new partnerships with a broad range of relevant stakeholders.
The Associate Partnerships Officer position is located under the Division of Public Private Partnerships (IET/PPP) which promote strategic partnerships to increase the impact potential of UNIDO projects, Programme for Country Partnerships (PCPs) and Country Programmes (CPs) and regional and global cooperation programmes. Such partners would include private sector associations, individual firms, think tanks, development agencies and financing partners, the latter to be attended in coordination with Division of Innovative Finance (IET/IFI). It designs, negotiates and coordinates partnerships with global initiatives, fora and developmental partners engaged in sustainable industrial development.
The Associate Programme Officer works under the overall guidance of the Chief of the Division of Public Private Partnerships, in close collaboration with colleagues to support the mandate of the Division to promote strategic partnerships to increase the impact potential of UNIDO projects and programmes.
At the P2 level, the incumbent is expected to deliver: (a) work that is analytical in contributing to results achieved by the Division; (b) in creating an enabling environment for collaborative work which is catalytic to achieving results; (c) in building relationships which contributes to counterparts’ engagement and (d) in achieving results that provide baselines for a service. The measure of success is timely, consistent and appropriate delivery of results.
The UNIDO Staff Performance Management System reinforces the collaboration within formal units as well as among cross-functional teams. In this context, the Associate Partnerships Officer collaborates with his/her supervisor and colleagues, within as well as outside the division. Within the formal teams, the incumbent may be expected to backstop other team members as required.
Main Responsibilities
As a team-leader or member, whether on a divisional, cross-functional or cross sectoral level, the incumbent shall carry out the following generic activities to achieve the results of the Division and the outcomes of Directorate:
- Develop and operationalize a data-driven partnership management tool: Participate in the development, integration and management of a robust Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solution to serve as a real-time knowledge sharing and decision-making tool. This will serve as an organizational tool for partnership monitoring, reporting, and learning.
- Develop new business models for the engagement with technology leaders:In close collaboration with the Division of Digitalization, Innovation and Technical Cooperation Optimization (COR/DIT), scale-up partnerships with technology leaders to harness digital innovation and co-create impactful projects that drive industrial transformation.
- Integrated Partnership Approaches in UNIDO: Contribute to the establishment and refinement of partnership modalities and mechanisms, assist in the development of partnership instruments, and serve as a knowledge source on partnerships within the organization. Cooperate with other divisions in-house with the purpose of identifying and developing synergistic opportunities with industry leaders, facilitating strategic partnerships, and providing advisory support across the partnership lifecycle for the successful scale-up of strategic UNIDO initiatives.
- Member State Engagement via Private Sector: Assist in developing strategies to strengthen relations with Member States through private sector cooperation and explore the sector’s role in enhancing UNIDO membership engagement.
- Global Forum Function: Assist in the preparation for UNIDO’s global forum activities (conferences, seminars, expert group meetings, etc.) and in their running. Prepare UNIDO publications and other information dissemination aids and tools. Keep abreast of technical and economic developments, market developments and trends in the areas of the Division’s mandate through close contacts with the business sector and other non-state actors.
- Support and Research Tasks: Includes drafting reports and undertaking research tasks as required.
- Perform other related duties and assignments as required by the Chief of the Division or the Managing Director of the Directorate.
Minimum Organizational Requirements
Education
Advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in economics, business administration, international relations, or a related field with a focus on international business and/or public policy, is required.
Experience
- A minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in developing and managing partnerships at international level is required.
- Ability to research and analyse information is required.
- Knowledge/experience in all phases of the Project Cycle, is desirable.
- Experience in evaluating the needs, conditions and problems in developing countries, is desirable.
- Experience in developing or managing strategic partnerships with the business sector, resource mobilization and/or business development is required.
- Familiarity with the UN system and its context is required.
Languages
Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Fluency in or working knowledge of other official language(s) of the United Nations, is desirable.
