CFEE Fieldwork Grants 2025 to carry out field missions in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa: Apply Now!

Overview

The French Center for Ethiopian Studies (CFEE) in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), French Institute for Research Abroad (UMIFRE) of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE) and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS / INSHS), offers doctoral students partial funding to carry out field missions in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

MA students and PhD candidates are eligible to apply.The Field grants are for doctoral and master’s students in 2025.There is no nationality restriction. Applications can be submitted in French or English.

All applications for CFEE Fieldwork grants in 2025 for PhD candidates & MA students must reach the CFEE by email only (secretariat.scientifique@cfee.cnrs.fr and direction@cfee.cnrs.fr ) before March 28, 5 p.m. (Addis Ababa time) . An acknowledgement of receipt will be sent for each file. The application will be processed and the response sent to the project leader at the end of April. The fieldwork must be carried out between May and December 2025.

Application Requirements must include the following:

  • The title of the project;
  • The applicant’s full contact details as well as a brief description of their status (employed student, scholarship holder, grant recipient, no income, etc.) and academic framework (depending on the case: institutional affiliation, title of current academic work and names of tutors, discipline, year of registration);
  • A presentation of the project including an argument on the research issues, the analysis methods, the expected results; as well as the feasibility of the project with regard to the Ethiopian context: the itinerary, the resource contacts (institutions or individuals) and the planned program with a timetable for implementation.
  • A brief curriculum vitae and, where applicable, a list of works and publications;
  • A detailed forecast budget (in Ethiopian birr or euros) for the operation showing other financing and its planned use ( maximum ETB 80,000 );
  • A reminder of the aid received from the CFEE over the last five years;
  • An attached letter from the dissertation or thesis director supporting the request;

CFEE Fieldwork Grants Selection Criteria

During the evaluation and selection of applications by a scientific committee, particular account will be taken of the scientific qualities, the relevance and feasibility of the projects, the competence of the person(s) implementing them, the adequacy of the forecast budget, the academic added value envisaged (university degree, scientific publication, production of data within the framework of a broader project, etc.). The suitability of the project with one of the CFEE research axes is obligatory and must be justified in the presentation of the project.

Several themes will be favored: conflicts in the Horn of Africa; urban policies; archaeology in eastern and southern Ethiopia; historical and socio-economic relations with the eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, etc.); migrations and ages of life.

Any assistance obtained from the CFEE will be subject to a mandatory final activity report from the beneficiaries. The beneficiary will receive 75% of the amount of the allowance, in ETB or euros, at the start of their mission. They will receive the balance of their allowance once the final activity report has been submitted to the CFEE before December 1, 2024. Stipends can only be paid to students undertaking a field mission in the Horn of Africa, and no payment will be made to awardees who are unable to travel to the region due to restrictions.
