Green Africa Youth Organization is recruiting for Project Coordinator – Zero Waste Cities Project: Apply Now!
Background
GAYO is a youth-led gender-balanced Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that advocates for environmental sustainability and community development. Founded in 2014, GAYO is dedicated to raising awareness, educating, and building the capacity of different stakeholders to adopt sustainable environmental practices that satisfy the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to have a good quality of life. To achieve its objective, GAYO works with various institutions and multiple levels of governance to implement sustainable agriculture, circular economy and renewable energy activism that provide green jobs and better environmental conditions for all.
Position Description
As part of Green Africa Youth Organization’s flagship Sustainable Communities Project, the organization has piloted a Zero Waste City model in Accra, Ghana. This Zero Waste Cities model is situated within the communities of the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly. The project capitalizes on the organic, electronic, and plastic waste menace in Accra to design waste management solutions that support the move to create environmentally sound, self-reliant communities, create jobs, and be replicated across cities in Ghana and Africa.
In the 1st phase, the Zero Waste Cities model has built the capacity of waste pickers (both formal and informal), municipal officials, and existing SMEs and provided them with resources to establish an incentive-based waste collection and segregation system for the different types of waste. Leveraging stakeholder engagement and collaboration, the 1st phase has designed a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), and a composting site. Deployment of air quality sensors, the establishment of 4 more material recovery facilities, and a makerspace are to be implemented in the next phase. Following this, the composting site would be used to generate compost which will be used to green the city through urban gardening.
GAYO seeks to bring on board a project coordinator to support the establishment of Zero Waste Accra that can serve as a model to be replicated in other spaces. The project coordinator would work closely with the project team to execute its deliverables.
