About Climate Analytics

Climate Analytics is a global climate science and policy institute established in 2008 that delivers cutting-edge science, analysis and support to accelerate climate action and keep global warming below 1.5°C. Its international team is composed of roughly 140 staff. Half are based at Climate Analytics headquarters in Berlin, Germany, and the remainder work out of its five regional offices in Africa, Australia & Pacific, the Caribbean, South Asia and North America. 

Job description

Climate Analytics is currently seeking a Climate Policy Analyst and NDC Implementation Specialist for its international and diverse Lomé Team to work under the supervision of the Head of the Africa Office and the Head of the Implementations Strategies Team and with its team of experts.

You will support the implementation of activities and country engagement. The Climate Analytics Implementation Strategies Team is responding to the evolving needs of developing countries as it relates to the implementation of the Paris Agreement. In response to the outcome of the UNFCCC COP26, Climate Analytics is working to build capacity to support countries in increasing ambition to meet the temperature goal of the Paris Agreement, specifically through the development and revision of nationally determined contributions (NDCs), development of long-term strategies (LTS), modelling GHG emission reductions, and other areas related to the implementation of mitigation and adaptation activities and accessing and implementing climate finance.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Director of Climate Analytics Africa office, the Climate Policy Analyst & NDC Implementation Specialist will:

  • Support the implementation of Climate Analytics’ work program in Africa.
  • Support the strategic development and implementation of low-carbon and climate-resilient development initiatives, strategies and projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Support training and capacity-building programs for LDCs and African countries on climate finance through scaling up mechanisms that improve the endogenous mobilization of and access to climate finance.
  • Undertake research and analysis of NDCs, NAPs, LTS and other strategic and planning policy documents.
  • Support ambition enhancement in the development and updates of NDCs, NAPs and LTS.
  • Development of climate change mitigation and adaptation options, project proposals, implementation plans and financing strategies based on NDCs, NAPs, LTS and other climate policy documents.
  • Participate in remote or in-country missions, including supporting the organization of stakeholder workshops, bilateral meetings and public consultations mostly but not limited to Africa.
  • Support focus countries, regional and national organizations, agencies and governments and financing entities in accessing climate finance to implement climate change priorities.
  • Provide input for management and reporting on projects, and dissemination of results including lessons learned and best practices.
  • Support the development and acquisition of new projects.
  • In addition to supporting these activities, the policy analyst and Implementation specialist are expected to support broader activities of Climate Analytics Africa.

Your profile

  • A master’s degree in climate-related fields, environmental management, social sciences, law or economics or a related field. 
  • At least 8 years of working experience in climate policy related either adaptation or mitigation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of key aspects of NDCs, LTS and NAPs.
  • Analytical skills and ability to work both with quantitative data (e.g. emissions data, accounting issues) and policy context.
  • Experience with stakeholder engagement and government relations in Africa.
  • Track record of inter-disciplinary work and a profound interest in understanding and addressing international, regional, national and sub-national challenges to climate change policy.
  • Excellent understanding and experience in National Adaptation Planning and Nationally Determined Contributions to revision and implementation.
  • Good understanding of climate finance processes, modalities and sources.
  • High organization skills, being detail-oriented a motivated self-starter and a team player able to interact and cooperate with a diverse array of people, including remotely in a highly international team.
  • Proven track record and experience in project acquisition, overall management and coordination of large-scale projects.
  • Excellent English writing and verbal skills. However, for the requirements of this position, fluency in French is required.
  • Willingness to travel regionally and internationally on a needed basis.
  • Ability to work independently, high attention to detail and forward planning.
  • Interest in and proven ability to work in a diverse, interdisciplinary and international team.
