Job Description
Reporting to the Country Director (of the hosting country) the Climate and Resilience Specialist will provide technical expertise to support and ensure the integration of climate change mitigation and adaptation (climate-smart programming) into the Country Strategies of Plan International’s four Southern Africa countries of Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique
Climate and Resilience Specialist Role Purpose
The Regional Climate & Resilience Expert will provide technical expertise to support and ensure the integration of climate change mitigation and adaptation (climate-smart programming) into the Country Strategies of Plan International’s four Southern Africa countries of Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique. This will entail devising innovative approaches to engage youth in adaptation or conservation programming, developing internal guidance and knowledge on nature-based solutions and mainstreaming environmental performance indicators and measures across the four countries’ thematic areas as well as build capacity in these countries.
Dimensions of the Role
The Regional Climate & Resilience Expert will represent Plan International at local, regional and international events and support the different country teams in devising strategies to integrate climate and environmental interventions across the portfolio and support the business development teams in tasks of acquisition, including proactive outreach to potential donors and partners in the region, as well as proposal development.
The Climate & Resilience Expert will collaborate closely with the Heads of Programme, Business Development Managers, Thematic/Sector Leads, Project Managers and MERL Managers and in each of the four countries, as well as the global Climate & Resilience Network of Plan International.
The Climate & Resilience Expert will be expected to initiate new or analyse ongoing research and synthesize findings to inform programme design and implementation. The candidate’s experience in climate change adaptation will also steer Plan International’s Anticipatory Action approaches with a particular focus on identified hazards specific to each of the 4 countries
Knowledge and skills:
- Master’s Degree in Climate/Environmental Science, Social Sciences, Development Studies/International Development or related fields
- At least 5-years’ substantial experience of practical leadership on climate change adaptation/innovation processes that meet sustainability criteria in interdisciplinary/multi-sector programs, preferably within the development sector
- Demonstrated experience in producing high-quality written materials (concepts/strategies, training materials, etc.), grounded on fact-based interdisciplinary research across Education, Agriculture, Environment (natural resources and ecosystem services) sector and sustainability in development settings
- Direct experience in co-developing winning proposals on climate innovations to institutional donors
- Global experience of working in a multi-cultural setting; familiarity with the Southern Africa context is an advantage
- Experience in facilitating group processes, workshops, technical meetings
- Institutional donor experience (especially climate resilience funding) would be an asset
- Ability to provide remote support to teams in different countries, work well in a multicultural team environment, to as well as responding to changes in the context of work requirements, to multi-task and to meet tight deadlines
- Excellent communication skills, including fluent spoken and written English
- Exceptional networking skills with a talent for creating and maintaining relationships.
This position is open to Mozambican, Malawian, Zambian and Zimbabwean nationals and people with the rights to work in the stated countries.
