Call for Contributions: Join China-Global South Project as a Part Time Contributor on African Critical Minerals Research

Overview

The China-Global South Project (CGSP) is seeking individuals (journalists, researchers, and subject matter experts) and organizations that are motivated and passionate about mining activities in Africa, particularly those related to critical minerals.

CGSP is building an interactive map that follows China’s presence in the critical minerals in Africa. For this project, CGPS has covered five countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Guinea.

CGSP is seeking contributions in the form of analyses, reports, and impact stories that explore how mining activities are affecting local communities—both positively and negatively. Its goal is to present an up-to-date picture of these developments while offering a broader, fact-based, and objective perspective.

While its influence on the mining sector in these countries is clear, it is equally important to examine the broader social, environmental, and economic effects of its presence—and to ensure that the voices of those affected, both positively and negatively, are heard. CGSP intends to publish eleven articles on topics around the themes below. The general topics are derived from the overall observations and results of our research.

Who Should Apply?

If you are a journalist, academic, writer, activist, or researcher specializing in mining, environmental, and human rights issues, CGSP invites you to share your research, personal experiences, and stories.

CGSP strongly encourage women, youth, and members of indigenous groups to contribute and participate in this important dialogue. Selected content will be published on CGSP English and French platforms and will be an integrated part of the narrative that will sustain the interactive data tool that will accompany this research.

Content Guidelines

  • Formats: reports, thematic or opinion articles, features, photo essays, or multimedia content.
  • Content should be original, well-researched, and thoroughly checked, and it should bring new ideas or perspectives to the topic, as well as be fact-based.
  • Reports and articles should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words.
  • Language: French and English.
  • Period: Articles will be published between July and September.

How To Apply

  • Apply with a short presentation of no more than three paragraphs.
  • Briefly explain your idea for the article, your preliminary research, and how you plan to produce it: what format, what type of sources you’ll use, what places you’ll visit, and when you’ll be able to send the first draft. Briefly describe your background with a resume or LinkedIn profile.
  • Please provide 2 or 3 examples of your previous work. Only the 11 best will be selected, published, and integrated into the tool.
  • Please combine all of the above materials into a single PDF as the system does not allow for multiple file uploads. If you prefer to send the materials by email, please do so to cgneema@chinaglobalsouth.com.

Compensation: Variations according to format and amount of work required will be discussed individually with contributors.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact C. Geraud Neema, CGSP Africa Editor, at cgneema@chinaglobalsouth.com, or Eric Olander, CGSP Editor-in-Chief, at eric@chinaglobalsouth.com.
