Overview

GAYO is looking for a Finance Officer who will provide essential day-to-day support to its team by maintaining accurate financial records, supporting routine transactions, and assisting with internal financial processes.

About GAYO

Founded in 2014, GAYO is dedicated to raising awareness, educating, and building the capacity of youth,
as well as different stakeholders, to combat the socio-ecological injustices driving the ongoing global polycrisis spanning from climate, environment, health, economy, food, and water. GAYO’s work focuses on reducing the threats to humans and nature, which include but are not limited to the effects of climate change, disasters caused by natural hazards, and societal inequalities.

As a result, GAYO’s interventions intentionally target the vulnerable in society: children, youth, and women. To achieve its objective, GAYO works with various institutions and multiple levels of governance (local, national, regional, and global) to implement sustainable agriculture, circular economy, and renewable energy activism interventions that provide green jobs and better environmental conditions for all.

GAYO is seeking a Finance Officer who will provide essential day-to-day support to the Finance Manager and wider team. This role focuses on maintaining accurate financial records, supporting routine transactions, and assisting with internal financial processes. The Officer will also support the implementation of financial controls and ensure the project teams are well aware of appropriate processes and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Record-Keeping & Transactions

  • Process and record payments, staff retirements, and vendor invoices in line with internal procedures.
  • Reconcile bank, cash, and balance sheet accounts on a timely basis.
  • Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in compliance with IFRS/GAAP.
  • Maintain orderly and updated physical and digital financial filing systems.
  • Supervise petty cash management and ensure timely reconciliations.
  • Support the timely and accurate entry of financial data into the accounting system.
  • Assist in the month-end closeout.

Budgeting and Financial Forecasting

  • Participate in the preparation and consolidation of annual budgets and forecasts.
    Monitor actual expenditures against budgets and investigate variances.
    Contribute to the financial aspects of strategic planning processes.

  • Ensure all financial documentation is properly labeled, authorized, and archived.
    Support procurement processes by ensuring finance-related compliance (e.g., quotes,vouchers)
    Assist in tracking expenses against approved budgets

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong foundational knowledge in financial accounting, budgeting, and reporting
  • Proficiency in financial analysis and forecasting
  • Sound understanding of financial systems, internal controls, and compliance
  • Hands-on experience with accounting software and advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong time management and organizational abilities
  • Reliable record-keeping and documentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Basic knowledge of project financial management and donor reporting
  • Proactive and solution-oriented mindset
  • Commitment to integrity, confidentiality, and professional ethics

Requirements

  • Minimum academic requirement of a degree in Accounting, Finance, or any related field..
  • At least 2-3 years of relevant professional experience in the non-profit sector.
  • Basic knowledge of financial principles and accounting systems.
  • Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage) is preferred.
  • Substantial level of self-organization, being methodical, setting priorities, and paying attention to detail.
