Call for Applications: MAPS Summer School
Amref International University (AMIU), in collaboration with Sapienza Università di Roma under the Migration and Displacement Action Plan for Sub-Saharan Africa (MAPS) that is co-funded by the European Union, invites 2025 AMIU postgraduate students whose research focuses on migration or forced displacement to apply for this unique opportunity.
AMIU University is pleased to invite interested doctoral students and early career researchers in the field of migration and forced displacement-related studies, to submit their applications to attend the MAPS Summer School: Understanding Migration and Forced Displacement in Sub-Saharan Africa, organized within the framework of Migration and Displacement Action Plan for Sub-Saharan Africa (MAPS) | Capacity4dev.
Background
This Summer School application call is launched within the framework of the project “Migration and displacement Action Plan for sub-Saharan Africa (MAPS)”, co-funded by the European Union which aims to improve research and awareness on migration and forced displacement across 10 African countries. By addressing critical knowledge gaps and promoting dialogue between researchers, policymakers, and civil society organizations, the project seeks to inform policy making and programming on migration and displacement in the region.
Within this project, young researchers from ten African countries will be selected to conduct research on the themes of migration and forced displacement. They will have the opportunity to be supervised by distinguished academics from both Africa and Europe and to participate in a capacity building programme consisting of three summer schools, each focusing on a specific aspect of the topic.
The first Summer School will be hosted by AMIU in Nairobi, Kenya, from 10 to 16 November. It will focus on Migration Concepts, Frameworks, and Challenges. analysed through four thematic areas:
i. Peace in Practice: EU–Africa cooperation on migration and asylum policy;
ii. People:iii. Planet: Climate change, disasters, natural hazard stressors, and resilience;
iv. Prosperity: Education, employment, health, housing, equality, and socio-spatial inclusion — the

Within this international school, an additional ten AMIU students specialising in migration and forced
displacement–related studies will also have the opportunity to participate. They will attend lectures
and engage with international scholars, providing them with valuable opportunities for exchange,
networking, and exploring new research perspectives.
Eligibility:
- Must be a Bonafede 2025 AMIU student undertaking their post graduate academic studies in any of the Amref International University postgraduate academic programmes
- Research thesis for the applicant must focus on migrants and or the displaced persons as the study population
Other Requirements:
- Research thesis details: The applicant, in not more than 750 words is required to attach the
following details:
- the name of the academic programme that you are studying and the level of study eg
Master of Public Health, currently in Semester 3 - the research thesis title
- statement of the problem
- study objectives/ research questions/ and or hypotheses, if applicable
- the study justification and significance
- study design and its rationale
- the study target population, with the inclusion and exclusion criteria
- a summary on the planned data collection strategy
- data analysis and reporting
