About Clean Air Initiative Cameroon (CAIC)
Clean Air Initiative Cameroon is a non-profit organization advancing clean air, sustainable mobility, and climate action across Cameroon. Through research, advocacy, citizen science, and public education, CAIC works to reduce air pollution in cities like Douala and Yaoundé, where transport-related emissions remain a major challenge.
CAIC new initiative — Pedal for Clean Air — aims to promote cycling culture in Douala by establishing school cycling clubs, training youth and community members in safe cycling, organizing awareness campaigns, and building momentum toward long-term cycling advocacy.
Role Overview
CAIC is seeking a motivated Research Intern–Sustainable Mobility/Transport to support the Pedal for Clean Air project and wider clean transportation activities. The intern will work physically at its Douala office (Bonaberi) under the direct supervision/mentorship of the Executive Director.
This Research Intern–Sustainable Mobility role is ideal for someone passionate about cycling advocacy, clean air, sustainable transport, urban mobility, and community-centered climate solutions.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical & Research Support
- Conduct research on air pollution, sustainable mobility trends, and transport challenges in Douala.
- Assist in collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data from cycling clubs, training activities, and field sessions.
- Support development of reports, policy briefs, and evidence for advocacy.
- Map cycling barriers (e.g., unsafe roads, lack of infrastructure) to support future cycling audits.
2. Project Implementation – Pedal for Clean Air
- Assist with the setup and coordination of school cycling clubs.
- Help organize training workshops on cycling basics, road safety, and practical field sessions.
- Support logistics for bicycles, helmets, reflective vests, safety kits, and training materials.
- Participate in community engagement, beginner cycling support, and event facilitation.
3. Communication & Outreach
- Contribute to awareness campaigns (social media, flyers, radio/TV content).
- Draft short educational content linking cycling, clean air, and climate action.
- Support visual documentation (photos, short videos) of project activities.
- Engage youth, community members, influencers, and partner schools in visibility efforts.
4. Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (MEL)
- Track participation, training outcomes, and engagement metrics.
- Document lessons learned and best practices for project improvement.
- Support preparation of monthly project updates and final project reports.
Qualifications & Desired Profile
Academic Background (any of the following):
- Environmental Science / Environmental Engineering
- Civil Engineering / Urban Planning
- Transport Engineering / Mobility Studies
- Geography, Public Health, or related field
- OR relevant experience/strong interest in sustainable mobility and air quality
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong interest in clean air, sustainable mobility, cycling, or climate action.
- Basic research and data analysis abilities (Excel, Google Sheets, SPSS, or similar).
- Good communication skills (English and/or French).
- Ability to work in communities and engage with youth.
- Organizational and project support skills.
- Cycling ability is an advantage (not mandatory — training will be provided).
- Proactive attitude, willingness to learn, and openness to fieldwork.
