NewClimate Institute is currently looking for two new colleagues to join their team as policy analysts with a focus on corporate net zero strategies! About the Climate policy analyst vacancy(corporate net zero strategies) (R-2307) (d/f/m)

Start date: As soon as possible. Full time – 40 hours per week.

Location: Cologne (preferred) or Berlin

Deadline: 31 October 2023

The policy analyst position

NewClimate Institute is seeking one or more climate policy analyst(s) in Cologne (preferred) or Berlin, to strengthen the team in our analysis of corporate climate action. Depending on your background and interests, your work would focus on several of the following topics:

  • Analysis of the transparency and integrity of companies’ net zero strategies. 
  • Analysis of sector-specific decarbonisation pathways and 1.5 °C compatible benchmarks.
  • Analysis of the role of carbon dioxide removals for achieving net-zero and net-negative GHGemissions.
  • Analysis and outreach on constructive models for corporate climate responsibility, and thelimitations of offsetting narratives.
  • Keeping track of the rapidly evolving policy environment around corporate net-zero targets.
  • Analysis of the link between companies’ climate strategies and countries’ climate changemitigation plans.

You would work on various projects related to the Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor and the Net Zero Tracker. These projects track the trends in corporate climate action with the intention to provide critical insights on the fast-moving developments in the space. We aim to identify replicable good practice as well as issues that undermine the integrity of companies’ pledges.

The climate policy analyst position includes, among other tasks, quantitative and qualitative analysis, the contribution to research reports, desk analysis on climate change mitigation related topics, advocacy and outreach on the topic of corporate climate responsibility, and the organisation of and participation in workshops and conferences.

This position comes with an attractive package of salary and other benefits including 30 days of paid holiday, a public transport pass (“Deutschlandticket”), and support for a private pension scheme. The general German benefits scheme includes health insurance and social security. In certain cases, NewClimate Institute can also provide administrative support for visa applications for non-EU nationals.

Climate policy analyst Candidate profile

You should be highly motivated with a strong interest and expertise in the field of climate change policy, sustainable development and sectoral transformation. We are looking for somebody who is:

  • Motivated to work for a forward thinking, evolving, non-profit organisation in a dynamic,impact-oriented team-work atmosphere
  • Interested to be part of a multi-disciplinary, international team
  • Self-sufficient, independent and eager to learn
  • Flexible and interested to travel within Germany and internationally

Requirements are:

  • Master level university degree or equivalent in a relevant field (e.g. environmental sciences, physics, engineering, economics or political sciences)
  • Understanding of the climate policy landscape, both at a country specific and international level
  • Excellent report writing, communication and presentation skills; ability to express ideas succinctly both verbally and in writing
  • Fully proficient in English; any other language is a plus
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.).
  • Knowledge of mitigation options in individual sectors (e.g. energy systems, buildings, transport, industry, forestry, agriculture) is an advantage
  • Understanding of corporate governance and the various stakeholders involved in corporate decision making is also an advantage
