Stockholm Environment Institute Internship Overview

Based in Bangkok, SEI Asia has a diverse team of multinational experts who integrate scientific research with participatory approaches to co-develop and share knowledge, build partnerships, and influence policy for resilient development. SEI Asia’s work focuses on gender and social equity, climate adaptation, disaster risk reduction, water insecurity and integrated water resources management, transitional agriculture, renewable energy and urbanization.

SEI Asia is an affiliate of Chulalongkorn University (CU), Thailand. SEI and CU have an agreement to foster innovative scientific research combined with effective policy engagement on development and environmental challenges in Asia. The key areas of collaboration are intellectual engagement for joint research applications and fund mobilization, lectures and seminars for CU students, post-graduate supervision and examination, and CU–SEI employee links.

The Stockholm Environment Institute Internship role and Policy Engagement team

The policy engagement team at SEI Asia is engaged in policy-relevant research, policy analysis and policy engagement supporting climate change mitigation and sustainable development. We assist various ongoing research projects across diverse sectors and thematic areas, including but not limited to just energy transitions, urban development, public health policy, climate finance and land-based mitigation actions and practices. The intern will support our Policy Research Fellow with research duties and conduct background research on topics relevant to the team’s activities.

Key responsibilities include:

Research support

  • Assist in compiling, reviewing and synthesizing literature and data on topics such as climate finance, energy transitions, urban health and air pollution.
  • Under the research fellow’s guidance, gather and present information on policymaking dynamics and decision-making processes in the Mekong countries, relevant to SEI’s work areas.
  • Draft synthesis knowledge documents for senior staff on issues related to the team’s work areas.
  • Provide ad-hoc research support to other SEI research teams, subject to the Policy Research Fellow’s approval.

Outreach and engagement support

  • Conduct background research on political dynamics in Southeast Asia, focusing on the Mekong countries.
  • Support centre staff with outreach tasks (e.g., conference/workshop participation, note-taking).
  • Maintain databases and organizational lists.
  • Contribute to horizon scanning and scoping of socio-political developments in Asia.
  • Assist in daily project and team management tasks (e.g., note-taking, project coordination).

Stockholm Environment Institute Internship Formal qualifications and knowledge

  • A master’s degree (or nearing completion) in a relevant field such as energy/climate policy, political science, economics, environmental studies.
  • Familiarity with climate change mitigation, climate and energy policies, and climate finance.
  • Knowledge of Southeast Asia’s policy environment related to these topics.
  • Excellent written and spoken English required.

Desirable skills and experience

  • A network of sustainability professionals in the region.
  • Familiarity with key institutions in climate change and sustainable development in Asia.
  • Knowledge of a Southeast Asian language, particularly from the Mekong countries.

Personal skills required

  • You are a team player with a collegial and friendly approach to colleagues and boundary partners.

Additional information

International applicants or those without legal status to work in Thailand are welcome to apply but may face additional eligibility processes. If legally able to work in Thailand for at least six months, please indicate in your application. Visa expenses will be covered by SEI (where applicable).
