Specialists in Development Services Field of Activity

Do you want to help reduce the digital divide in countries in the Global South and actively shape digital transformation locally? Do you want to advise municipal multimedia centers or youth clubs in West Africa, improve platforms for climate data in Latin America, advance digital administrative services for communities in Central Asia, support micro-enterprises in North Africa with digitalization or make vocational training in South Asia more digitally oriented? Do you have experience in the area of ​​digital transformation and have technical and methodological skills? Then you are right with us!

Under the motto “ promoting inclusive digital change ”, our Digital Ambassador Initiative aims to provide disadvantaged groups, communities and civil society organizations in partner countries with better access to relevant digital technologies and their use. In this way, more people should benefit from the opportunities offered by digitalization. The Digital Ambassador initiative particularly promotes the use of the Internet in rural areas, digital literacy among women, girls and young people and digital support for democratic processes.

Digital Ambassadors are mediators between the digital world, the digital ecosystems and the realities on site. With their work, they support the development of solutions to overcome the digital divide between urban and rural, poor and rich or men and women.

Specialists in Development Services Tasks

As part of their service as a specialists in the development services, they will take on the following exemplary tasks, each of which is derived from the specific needs on site:

  • Imparting basic digital skills in partner authorities, developing easily accessible digital information channels, support in the areas of data protection/cybersecurity, promoting the digital entrepreneur and start-up scene, Industry 4.0, and digitalization in vocational training.
  • Designing digital concepts or media campaigns for NGOs that promote democratic participation online.
  • Developing innovative solutions for access to the Internet where broadband does not exist or for those who do not have a smartphone with a data flat rate.
  • As a Digital Ambassador, you often work within a GIZ team with complementary skills, but always together with local partners with whom you design and develop the solutions together.

Specialists in Development Services Profile

  • University degree or professional qualification related to digital change (social, political or economic sciences, social work, pedagogy, media, ICT, engineering or comparable qualification).
  • Practical professional experience in supporting digital transformation processes and initial experience in the area of ​​development cooperation/international cooperation (possibly also as part of qualified internships during your studies).
  • Proven IT/ICT knowledge and experience and understanding of IT developments and IT/ICT projects or proven experience in teaching digital skills or digital change management approaches.
  • Knowledge of the promotion of “ digital literacy ” and consulting approaches to information and communication technologies as well as interest in cooperation/interface management and process design/creation (e.g. design thinking , scrum ) as well as good knowledge of current European discussions, e.g. on artificial intelligence, transparency of supply chains, data protection (especially GDPR), consumer rights in the digital space, as well as the UN Principles for Digital Development
  • Experience abroad, preferably in non-European countries, and experience working in intercultural contexts.
  • Sensitivity to and experience with approaches to gender equality in the sense of German feminist development cooperation.
  • Teamwork and networking skills combined with the talent to think conceptually and analytically as well as a structured working style with a high degree of self-organization, flexibility and creativity as well as strong communication, presentation and moderation skills.
  • Fluent knowledge of English or German or, depending on the location, very good knowledge of Spanish, French or local lingua franca is an advantage.

Location: Capital and provincial cities in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, Latin America or the MENA region

For this deployment, the specific geographical location depends on the project needs. Digital Ambassadors are currently deployed in German development cooperation partner countries, such as Ghana, Malawi, Senegal, Vietnam, Pakistan, Honduras and Egypt.

The duration of the Specialists in Development Services assignment, including the start and end dates, also depends on the project in which applicants are to be deployed. Generally, the duration is between one and two years.

Hints

The GIZ development service welcomes applicants who have completed vocational training and/or a degree and who have at least two years of relevant professional experience. You also have German citizenship or the citizenship of another EU member state.  

Willingness to undertake regular business trips is required.
