PhD Candidate in ‘Sustainable climate change adaptation’
The Water Resources and Ecosystems Department in IHE Delft conducts research and education activities that aim to support society in decisions and policy that sustain freshwater resources and ecosystems by balancing their protection, restoration, use, and development. We conduct research and provide post-graduate education and training to professionals in the fields of hydraulic engineering, hydrology/hydrogeology, aquatic ecosystems, while maintaining inter-disciplinary collaborations with other departments in IHE Delft and with international partners.
Description of the project and the role of the PhD candidate
IHE Delft Institute for Water Education seeks a PhD candidate to conduct research related to the financing and sustainability of climate change adaptation in the water sector, as part of a recently awarded research project FISCAL (Financial Fairness, Inclusion and Sustainability in Climate Change Adaptation). FISCAL is a collaborative project between IHE Delft and University of Dar es Salaam, and financed by the Water and Development Partnership Programme. The primary objective of the project is to evaluate past climate change adaptations implemented in low-/middle-income countries through the lens of inclusion and sustainability considering financial, environmental (in particular food and water resources) and social aspects. The output of the research is intended to provide policy recommendations and equitable financial investment guidelines for developing sustainable and inclusive climate change adaptation plans. Case studies for this research are envisioned from Tanzania, but not limited to.
The PhD candidate will be hosted by the Water Resources and Ecosystems Department of IHE Delft, and also registered at the Technical University of Delft (TUD). The candidate will closely work with a supervising team including Professor Graham Jewitt, Dr. Shreedhar Maskey, Dr. Nora Van Cauwenbergh, Dr. Yong Jiang at IHE Delft and Dr. Subira Eva Munishi at University of Dar es Salaam.
We are looking for a highly motivated and creative candidate with strong analytical skills.
The expected starting date is 1 June, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
PhD Candidate Responsibilities
- Carry out a comprehensive review of climate change adaptations implemented in the case study country with reference to their financial, social and environmental sustainability over space and time.
- Develop and apply a methodology and framework for systematic evaluation of the sustainability of climate change adaption plans with a focus on water resource.
- Travel to the case-study regions for data collection and consultations.
- Develop and successfully defend a PhD research proposal.
- Publish the obtained results in peer reviewed journals, which will contribute to the final PhD thesis.
- Contribute to and participate in the project activities related to the PhD research.
- Present the project results at national and international conferences and symposia.
- Contribute to IHE’s education programme including mentoring MSc theses which are linked to this PhD research.
- Write and successfully defend a PhD thesis.
PhD Candidate Requirements
- Following the requirements of the funding entity (the Water and Development Partnership Programme) the candidate must originate from a low-/middle-income country. With equal suitability, preference is given to a woman.
- A Master degree in either;
- (resource) economics or finance with a proven affinity for water related issues arising from climate change; or
- hydrology, or a closely related discipline, with a proven affinity for issues related to economics and/or finance.
- Proven excellent analytical skills, including handling qualitative and quantitative data and preferably experiences with programming (e.g. Phython) and GIS software (e.g. QGIS) for data analysis.
- Have an affinity with, and knowledge of, climate change impacts and adaptation related to water resources.
- Excellent communication skill in English and proven skill in scientific writing.
- Willingness to mentor master theses of MSc students and have a collaborative attitude.
- Willingness to work in and value a multi-cultural work environment and diversity.
Terms of employment
This is a position for 48 months (4 years), full time, with the expectation that the candidate will submit and successfully defend the PhD thesis within this period. The candidate will be stationed in Delft, the Netherlands. Employment at IHE Delft is according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (scale P). The appointment implies entry into the Netherlands’ Civil Service Pension Fund (ABP).
The initial contract is for 18 months. Within the first year a go/no-go decision will be made based on a detailed PhD research proposal to be developed by the candidate, which will determine whether or not the contract will be extended.
