Overview

The Peacekeeping Training Programme Unit (PTPU) is part of UNITAR’s Division for Peace. The Unit contributes to the international community’s efforts towards the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the building of lasting peace. Recognising that peace is a prerequisite for the achievement of the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, PTPU supports the development of capacities in the areas of peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and crisis management. Through innovative and results-oriented approaches, the Programme Unit strengthens knowledge and skills of individuals, groups, and institutions.

In alignment with the Agenda 2030 as well as UNITAR’s strategic vision, the Youth and Women’s Empowerment pillar within UNITAR’s Division for Peace contributes to a world in which young people and women are able to participate in and contribute to, on an equal base and at all levels, to the sustaining peace agenda.

Thematic Context of the Traineeship

UNITAR has developed the Women’s Leadership for Peace programme, which is the product of many years of experience working on the women’s empowerment-leadership-peacebuilding nexus. Over the years, UNITAR has not only seen first-hand the underrepresentation of women in formal and informal peace processes, but it has also received many requests from women and women-led organisations to provide training opportunities to reinforce efforts directed towards achieving gender equity and parity.

The programme is designed to fill the identified gap in existing training programmes on women’s leadership in the peace and security fields, responding directly to the unique challenges faced by women in this space and recognising the importance of women’s meaningful participation in leadership roles and in the promotion of stable and lasting peace. The Women’s Leadership for Peace programme consists of a wide portfolio of activities and capacity building opportunities which, when combined, will provide women with an unrivalled set of experiences, knowledge, and skills to take the next steps in their career.

General objective of the contract

Under the supervision of the Team Leader, UNITAR Traineeship on Youth and Women Empowerment will provide support on a wide variety of tasks linked to the development and delivery of this programme.

Responsibilities/Description of Professional Services:

  • Support with the further development of the Women’s Leadership for Peace programme
  • Support with desk research connected to the Women’s Leadership for Peace programme
  • Support with the creation of outreach materials connected to the Women’s Leadership for Peace programme
  • Development of content highlighting the Women’s Leadership for Peace Programme for social media channels 
  • Logistical and administrative support for the implementation of trainings and other events linked to the Women’s Leadership for Peace programme
  • Support with the drafting of various written outputs
  • Support the team with cross-cutting priorities in the working area “Youth and Women’s Empowerment” of UNITAR’s Division for Peace 
  • Support with any other tasks as requested by the supervisor

Measurable outputs / deliverables / schedule of deliverables:

  • Effective support is provided to projects implemented in partnership with other regional and International Organizations
  • Training and other events are prepared with a high degree of accuracy and due diligence and meet the criteria set out in the Quality Assurance Framework
  • Written outputs are prepared in line with UNITAR quality standards

Learning Objectives

By the end of the UNITAR Traineeship on Youth and Women Empowerment, the incumbent will be able to:

  • Identify terms and frameworks related to peace and security, as well as UN terminology
  • Review and recommend improvements for activities within the Women’s Leadership for Peace programme

Performance Indicators for evaluation of results:

Timely and quality submission of deliverables; activities implemented with a high degree of effectiveness and efficiency; excellent coordination with PTPU team members is ensured throughout the duration of this contract.

Minimum requirements

  • A university degree in peace and conflict studies, gender studies, international relations
  • Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate/postgraduate degree or be a recent graduate with the qualifications listed above (if selected, they must commence the traineeship within two years of graduation).

The ideal candidate can demonstrate a strong interest in learning project management, training development on women’s leadership, and capacity building for youth and women’s empowerment.

Skills required:

The applicant has organizational skills, shows initiative and dedication, and demonstrates independence at work and attention to detail. The candidate is a self-starter, out of the box thinker, and solution oriented. In addition, good communication skills (both written and oral) are essential in order to be able to work with various stakeholders from different cultural and professional backgrounds.

Motivation for continuous learning, as well as administrative and logistical support to the team are essential. Knowledge of using social media and other applications is desirable.

Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is essential. Knowledge of another official UN language would be an advantage.

Other: Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite) are required. Proficiency in writing, editing and presentation skills.
