The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) is the University of Freiburg’s international research college. It is at the centre of a very active research community and has since its creation in 2008 acquired an international reputation for academic excellence. The Institute supports innovative research projects through individual and group fellowships.

For the Academic Year 2024/25, the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies is offering FRIAS SENIOR FELLOWSHIP

Individual Senior Fellowships

(3- to 8-month fellowships between September 1st, 2024 and August 31st, 2025)

Application Deadline: September 15, 2023

The fellowships are avaiable for researchers with completed PhD plus a minimum of eight years of post-doctoral experience or a tenured professorship or equivalent permanent position.

Fellowships will allow researchers to conduct their own research projects. Since one of the aims of FRIAS is to foster cross-disciplinary communication, full-time presence at FRIAS is mandatory.

In general, all fellowships will be awarded to individuals with challenging and innovative research projects of top academic quality through a highly competitive, strictly merit-based selection process (expected success rate: ~15% of eligible applications). The all-important selection criterion is the academic excellence of both the applicant and the project proposal. Personal qualifications with regard to experience and capability to conduct the research project will also be considered during the evaluation of the applications.

Applications are welcome from all disciplines that can be supported at the University of Freiburg. Applicants are encouraged to learn about the University of Freiburg’s profile of particular research strengths: https://uni-freiburg.de/research/research-profile/.

Applicants must have either (a) six months’ research experience after their PhD at academic institution(s) in a country different from the country of their first academic degree OR (b) received a Master/PhD/ received tenure or equivalent in a country different from the country of their first academic degree. Short stays such as holidays, conferences or summer schools are not considered.

Successful FRIAS SENIOR FELLOWSHIP applicants will become FRIAS Fellows with all the corresponding rights and obligations for the requested funding period.

Fellows with an employment contract at their home institution will receive a mobility allowance if applicable to compensate them for the extra costs of their stay in Freiburg. A reimbursement of teaching replacement costs throughout the fellowship up to the level of a W2 professorship is possible. Fellows without an employment contract at their home institution will obtain an attractive salary (W2, 100%). Each Fellow will additionally receive a research cost contribution and will be reimbursed for the travel costs of the inbound and the outbound journey (if applicable). If eligible, Fellows accompanied by at least one child receive an additional monthly family allowance.
