University of British Columbia Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Overview
The University of British Columbia is pleased to partner with The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program to provide comprehensive scholarships to students from Sub-Saharan Africa. The University of British Columbia Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program provides access to education for academically talented, yet economically marginalized young people. Scholars in the Program have a demonstrated commitment to giving back to their communities and develop the leadership needed to contribute to social and economic transformation across the continent.
The University of British Columbia Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program will take place over a ten-year period with a total of 171 Mastercard Foundation Scholars, including undergraduate and masters students.

Beginning with five undergraduate students in 2013, UBC currently has 53 Mastercard Foundation Scholars on its Vancouver campus. In addition to their curricula engagement, the scholars will be mentored, engaged in leadership capacity building, participate in local and international community service learning, and take up summer internships in Africa to foster their interest and capacity to return to Africa to give back to their communities.
Reflecting UBC’s strategic commitment to supporting international students, the Mastercard Scholars will benefit from academic and social support programs such as Jump Start, programs focused on student wellbeing and personal development, while benefiting from the direct support of a newly created program director and a full range of academic success programs.
WHO WE ARE:
The University of British Columbia Mastercard Foundation Scholars Mastercard Foundation Program will take place over a ten-year period with a total of 163 Mastercard Foundation Scholars, including 77 undergraduate and 35 masters students. Beginning with five undergraduate students in 2013, in 2018 UBC will have more than 70 Mastercard Foundation Scholars.

Graduate Students Requirements
To be eligible for consideration for the University of British Columbia Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, the applicant must:
- have completed a Bachelor’s degree;
- must not already have a graduate or PhD degree;
- be 35 years old or younger at the time of application (i.e. born in 1988 or after);
- be a citizen or a refugee of a Sub-Saharan African country (listed here);
- have lived a significant part of their life in a Sub-Saharan African country;
- present economically disadvantaged financial circumstances
- have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances
- show leadership qualities or potential;
- demonstrate an interest in and commitment to giving back to their home community
- be a person who requires a Canadian study permit to study in Canada;
- not be a person who claimed or will claim asylum or protected person status after arriving in Canada;
- commit to returning to Africa in order to apply their training and skills to the betterment of others;
- be applying for a Master’s degree in one of the following faculties and programs at UBC’s Vancouver campus;
- Faculty of Forestry
- Faculty of Land and Food Systems
- Faculty of Science

These dates may vary from those posted on faculty websites. Please note that if you are applying for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC, you must submit all your documents (including your reference letters) by the dates requested below.
