Funded traineeships for young graduates at the EU Delegation to China

Are you a young graduate interested in international relations? Are you curious to learn more about work of a diplomatic mission and how the EU Delegation represents EU interests and values in China?

EU offers:

Funded Traineeships of up to 6 months within the following sections of the EU Delegation to China, starting in as from May 2024:

  • Traineeship in the Political section( POL)

Main tasks:

  • Research and analysis of information; reporting on Chinese policy and EU-China relations in the relevant files of the section;
  • Assist in organising visits, meetings and events hosted by the Delegation ; participate in meetings, events, seminars and conferences in Beijing; contribute to briefings and minutes for meetings;
  • Assist in organising meetings and events hosted by the Delegation;
  • Support the Delegation in the preparation of visits, missions as well as follow-up actions; taking memos and drafting reports;
  • Any other task , which may be beneficiary to the trainee with the aim to better understand the dynamics of the EU Delegation and EU-China relations;
  • Traineeship in the Press and Information sector (PPI):

Main tasks:

  • Research and analysis of information; reporting on Chinese policy and EU-China relations in the relevant files of the section;
  • Screening international and Chinese press;
  • Update the Delegation’s social media platforms; publish content on social media ( specific to PPI sector;
  • Attend and participate in meetings, events, seminars and conferences in Beijing; contribute to briefings and minutes for meetings;
  • Assist in organising meetings and events hosted by the Delegation;
  • Support the Delegation in the preparation of visits, missions as well as follow-up actions;
  • taking memos and drafting reports;
  • Any other task , which may be beneficiary to the trainee with the aim to better understand the dynamics of the EU Delegation and EU-China relations;
  • Traineeship in Economic & Financial Affairs section (ECFIN):

Contribute to fostering a better cooperation between EU and China in the area of economic and financial affairs.

Main tasks:

  • Contribute to the section’s analysis and reporting on China by monitoring China’s economic and financial market developments;
  • Research and analyse information; make contacts to discuss issues with economists at other embassies or institutions;
  • Assist the section in the preparation of conferences, seminars or visits;
  • Attend and participate in meetings, seminars and conferences in Beijing;
  • Contribute to briefings ahead of visits form EU HQ;
  • Carry out routine tasks such as proof reading or writing minutes from meetings;
  • Traineeship in the Green Transition Section (Green):

In charge of climate, environment, energy, fisheries and transport at the EU Delegation.

Main tasks:

  • research and analysis of information; reporting on Chinese policy and EU-China relations in the relevant files of the section;
  • Attend and participate in meetings, events, seminars and conferences in Beijing; contribute to briefings and minutes for meetings;
  • Assist in organising meetings and events hosted by the Delegation;
  • Support the Delegation in the preparation of visits, missions as well as follow-up actions; taking memos and drafting reports;
  • Any other task , which may be beneficiary to the trainee with the aim to better understand the dynamics of the EU Delegation and EU-China relations
We look for:

Funded Traineeships Qualifications or special requirements:

  • Taking into account the local health and security conditions, applicants currently residing in [China will only be considered.]
  • Good command and drafting skills in English;
  • Fluent Chinese (mandarin), with good interpretation skills will be an asset;
  • Sound Communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work in a team;
  • High degree of responsibility and discretion;
  • University degree in International Relations, EU Affairs, Political Science, Political Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, Economics, Finance, Multimedia or Communication;
  • Good user proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including PowerPoint;
  • Basic knowledge of the workings of the European Union and diplomatic missions.

How to apply for the Funded Traineeships?

Candidates must apply to the e-mail address delegation-china-hr@eeas.europa.eu and send the following documents:

  • A detailed standard Europass curriculum vitae (CV) https://europa.eu/europass/en (CVs in other format will not be considered)
  • a cover letter describing why you want to participate in a EU traineeship
  • and an application form

Please mention in the subject of your e-mail: Funded Traineeship – Name/Acronym of the Section (you may only apply to 1 traineeship per delegation, however based on your profile, the delegation could offer you a traineeship in another section).

Important information to read before applying

Before applying you are requested to examine the dedicated website as well as the general eligibility criteria for a paid traineeship (Article 8 of the Decision ADMIN(2017)28 – Paid traineeship).

Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. All costs related to travels, visa, insurance, accommodation must be borne by the trainee.

Applications from non-eligible candidates will not be considered. After the evaluation of all applications, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email. In case the selected candidates are not able to present the required documents, their application will be rejected.

The funded traineeships can only be offered in compliance with the local legislation as well as the legislation of the country of origin.

Citizens from EU Member states:

  • must provide proof that they will be covered against the risk of a pandemic and the costs of repatriation;
  • must hold a relevant entrance visa and / or temporary residence permit where applicable,  based on the traineeship agreement, the duration of the traineeship, and in compliance with the local legislation.
