Mission and objectives

UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty while protecting the planet. We help countries develop strong policies, skills, partnerships and institutions so they can sustain their progress The primary and overarching objective of United Nations Development Programme in Kenya is the eradication of poverty in the context of sustainable development, including the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals, and promotion of United Nations fundamental principles.

A core dimension to the work of UNDP in Kenya is on Democratic Governance given the national focus on governance reforms. UNDP supports the country’s efforts towards achieving the Vision 2030 Political Pillar, which envisions a democratic system that is issue-based, people-centered, results oriented and accountable to the public. This Political Pillar gears to transform the country’s political governance across five strategic areas; The Rule of Law, Electoral and Political Processes, Democracy and Public Service Delivery, Transparency and Accountability, Security Peace Building and Conflict Management.

These strategic areas are anchored in the Constitution, promulgated in August 2010 marking a major milestone in the democratic journey of Kenya and set a new threshold in terms of people-centred development.

Context

By the end of the century, almost half of the global population will be African. And by 2035 – less than 15 years from today – Africa will have the largest and youngest workforce in the world. African youth have the unique opportunity to leverage this energy to drive prosperity and innovation in their communities and across the continent. With such a significant percentage of the global population coming from this part of the world, the African continent will join the world in defining where the twenty-first century will go.

Despite the potential demographic dividend for Africa, youth voices and perspectives are often largely absent in decision-making processes and policies that affect them and define Africa’s development pathways.

To help bridge this gap, UNDP and UNV are implementing the Faces of Africa Social Media campaign, linking Africa’s youth and leaders by leveraging the power and potential of visual storytelling. The Faces of Africa Social Media campaign shall use the power and potential of photography and short form storytelling to achieve the following:

Document aspirations, experiences, challenges, and solutions from African youth to provide agency and channel of expression for African youth to share ideas, encouraging individuals and affiliates to drive tangible change on and beyond the continent. Communicate accurate, nuanced, and contextualized narratives about Africa, drawing attention to the vibrancy across Africa and counter common negative narratives about the continent. Connect African youth to each other and to national and continental leadership to bridge divides across the continent and contribute to the AU (African Union) Agenda 2063 goals and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Cultivate and curate a community of young African community youth leaders
