Communications Specialist Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP, through its Climate Change Mitigation Unit, is a key partner in the United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (UN-REDD programme), which builds on the combined convening role and technical expertise of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme and UNEP.

This position is home based, under the overall supervision of the UNEP UN-REDD Knowledge Management and Communications Global Team Leader.

Duties and responsibilities include:

1. Developing, writing, and editing engaging stories that highlight the key successes, lessons learned, challenges, and results of the UN-REDD Programme and its partner countries in climate change mitigation.

2. Conducting thorough research to create informative content that supports UNEP’s and UN-REDD’s initiatives, emphasizing the importance of conserving forest ecosystems, sustainably managing forests, and promoting sustainable development.

3. Conducting field missions and visits to partner communities to tell ‘action-oriented’ stories. These narratives aim to do more than just showcase UN-REDD’s efforts and results; they support technology transfer and capacity building in communities, emphasizing respect for and integration of Indigenous Peoples rights in these processes.

4. Leading the production of a variety of knowledge products, including technical and annual reports and the bi-monthly newsletter, ensuring they are accessible to a broad audience.

5. Crafting compelling content for social media platforms, speeches, case studies, and briefing notes that effectively communicate UNEP’s and UN-REDD’s mission and the critical role of forests in combating climate change.

6. Coordinating with experts and stakeholders to gather insights and testimonials that will enrich the narrative around forest conservation, sustainable forest management and climate action.

7. Coordinating the dissemination of information and knowledge through various channels, aiming to mobilize support and raise awareness of the Programme’s work among the global community and local partners.

8. Editing and refining content contributed by team members and partners, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and consistency with UNEP’s and UN-REDD’s messaging and advocacy goals.

9. Writing and documenting knowledge and insights, turning them into compelling narratives that facilitate knowledge generation and exchange.

Duties and responsibilities Qualifications/special skills

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, environmental science, or a related field is required. • Additional certification in media, journalism, or environmental studies is preferable. • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in editing reports and publications is required. • Proven track record of producing high-quality written content, including reports, articles, and social media posts related to climate change and deforestation is required.
