The Futurelect Southern Africa Public Leadership Programme aims to support the development of strong, diverse networks of political and government leaders across the SADC region.

Programme Description

The programme targets established leaders in various professions, educational institutions, communities, and society, aged 18 to 45. The Southern Africa Public Leadership Programme assists individuals in evaluating their readiness to pursue elected political office or roles as political appointees in public service.

Eligibiliy Criteria

The programme is tailored for proven leaders aged who are exploring roles in elected office or public service. Ideal candidates possess deep political awareness, effective leadership in diverse settings, initiative, strong communication skills, emotional intelligence, authenticity, and a genuine commitment to public service.

Duration

Seven months of intensive learning followed by five years of alumni engagement.

Curriculum

Seven in-residence weekend seminars covering workshops, expert-led sessions, case studies, and collaborative projects.

Objectives

Enhance public purpose understanding, navigate complexities, acquire campaign skills, improve decision-making, and manage transitions into the public service.

Programme Seminar Weekends

Fellows must attend all seven in-residence seminars, each spanning four days and three nights, typically starting Friday and ending Monday. Full participation in the seven-month Futurelect Southern Africa Public Leadership programme is mandatory. Applicants should ensure they can commit to attending all seven seminars without interruption. Shortlisted candidates will receive detailed communication on seminar dates and locations before accepting their place in the programme. Please note that travel is required.

Seminar 1: “Public Narrative: Why Me? Why Us? Why Now?”

Focuses on introductions and fellows’ personal exploration of their public purpose.

Seminar 2: “The State of Your Nation”

Fellows define their public service vision and constituencies while learning to navigate the complexities of implementing their plans in political and governmental contexts.

Seminar 3: “The Elements of a Public Life”

Introduces fellows to the systems, practicalities and challenges of a
career in the public eye.

Seminar 4: “Ethics in Public Leadership & Corruption Case Study”

Introduces fellows to government and political leaders who have
faced ethical crossroads in their efforts to be responsible and accountable public
leaders.

Seminar 5: “Political Campaigns & Grassroots Organising”

An extended campaign simulation designed to provide fellows with an opportunity to dive deep into the practicalities of running a political campaign.

Seminar 6: “Leadership by Design”

Expands upon the work begun in Seminar 2, further exploring the
challenges and complexities of driving change for the better in public sector
institutions.

Seminar 7: “Managing the Transition & Graduation Ceremony”

During this seminar, fellows have an opportunity to finalise and submit a personal strategy for their transition to public service.

Pricing

Upon acceptance of a place in the programme, a non-refundable, once-off enrolment fee is required. This fee will be communicated to successful applicants offered a space in the programme.

Limited financial assistance is therefore available for qualified applicants to create an inclusive learning community that is accessible to all.

Application Requirements

  • To qualify for the programme, you should be a proven leader in your profession, educational institution, or community.
  • Candidates should be citizens of the following Southern African countries: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. 
  • Candidates exploring elected political office or public service careers are encouraged to apply, regardless of educational background. We welcome applicants from all sectors eager to transition into public service leadership roles, regardless of political experience.

Application Process

You must complete an application form, submit a written personal statement, provide a video submission, and submit your curriculum vitae (CV). Following this, a selection of candidates will be shortlisted, and all applicants will be notified of the outcome.
