Overview
The role of young people, women, indigenous and marginalized communities in delivering climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies is of utmost importance. Moreover, partnering with young people, women, indigenous and marginalized communities to amplify calls for the global, regional and international action for climate justice is an essential part of the global resilience agenda, as the young people, women, indigenous and marginalized communities represent a major driver of development, social change, economic growth, innovation, and environmental protection.
In that recognition, in Kenya, the young people, women, indigenous and marginalized communities have been recognized as a key stakeholder constituency in local, national regional and international decision-making processes as suggested by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development since 1992. Consequently, with the 27th Conference of Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) being held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt in November 2022, the voice of the young people, women, indigenous and marginalized communities will be very critical to delivering amongst other things; ambitious climate commitments, increased adaptation ambitions, new, additional and predictable climate finance anchored on local knowledge and experiences and break in the deadlock of loss and damage negotiations.
Young Women Christian Association Kenya and the Africa Youth Initiative on Climate Change Kenya in partnership with HIVOs through the Voices for Just Climate Action project are committed to ensuring that the young people, women, indigenous and marginalized communities can access and be represented within all facets of the COP27 processes, including a presence at key international sessions where Post Paris Climate Dialogue Processes and climate justice-related decision making occurs.
As such, the consortium seeks to sponsor six(6) Kenyan representatives from the young people, women, indigenous and marginalized communities constituency aged between 18-35 years to attend this year’s COP in Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt. The sponsorship will include flights, transportation, accommodation, and living expenses for a period of time to be agreed on.
The deadline for submission is on Friday, 30th September 2022.
