Senior API Engineer

To support this development, we are looking for a qualified Senior API Engineer or engineering deputy lead to take responsibility for our Forum Web Services (FWS) platform and work with our teams of engineers and product managers to help bring digital products and features from conception to launch and beyond.
As the API Engineering Deputy Lead, you will reporting to the API Development Lead and supporting them in managing, building and maintaining the forum APIs following the API Design-First strategy, as well as mentoring fellow engineers and assisting product managers to deliver on the organization’s strategic vision and provide digital products that are recognized as best in the industry.

Senior API Engineer Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist engineers and product managers in adopting an API Design First approach by providing guidance and needed resources, to help achieve the business objectives in alignment with a more efficient and effective development process.
- Lead the design, implementation and continuous improvement of the overall FWS microservice architecture, sponsoring and supporting engineers with the right technologies, frameworks, and database structures
- Actively seek opportunities for innovation, adopt new tools and practices, and enhance the technical capabilities of the backend systems to improve performance and scalability
- Implement AI-driven features and capabilities to tailor user experiences with personalized content and recommendations
- Maintain and update technical documentation for backend systems, including API documentation, architecture diagrams, and database schemas.
- Collaborate with delivery teams, product owners and engineering leads to plan and prioritize backend development tasks, ensuring alignment with overall business strategies and platform design principles
Senior API Engineer Qualifications and Skills
- University-level degree in computer science, electrical engineering or a related field
- Relevant industry experience in a technical leadership role, showcasing your capacity to lead and inspire engineering teams
- Proven experience in designing and managing large scale micro-service architectures
- Software engineering experience specific to web APIs development preferably in Ruby (Python or NodeJS)
- Dedicated to delivering optimized, performant and highly scalable services, with the right monitoring, alerting and error tracking tools
- Proficient experience with relational databases: Postgres or similar
- Familiarity leveraging message brokers (like RabbitMQ or Kafka) to synchronize data between services and data sources
- Experience collaborating closely with engineering delivery teams and adhering to a structured development process, with a preference for experience in Agile environments
- Fluency in English, with excellent written, digital and verbal communication skills
- Valuable team player, challenging and analytical spirit with a willingness to learn
Senior API Engineer Additional skills:
- Experience working with non-relational vector datastores like Elasticsearch
- Experience with LLMs and transformer-based embeddings, and semantic retrieval techniques
- Prior experience with Heroku for hosting applications
- Familiarity with Salesforce and SOQL queries
