Statisticians Job Description

The OECD is launching an OECD-wide recruitment campaign for Statisticians to cover the full cycle of statistical activities from data collection, data management and analysis, to data dissemination. You will have the opporunity to shape insights on diverse subjects. Exciting opportunities await in areas such as; development, finance, employment, labour and social affairs, environment, education, agriculture and fisheries, centre for skills, and more. As a selected candidate, you’ll operate under the guidance of your assigned Directorate, taking charge of a specialized set of responsibilities amongst those outlined below.

Statisticians Main Responsibilities 

Data Collection and Dataset Management: 

  • Source, gather, and enhance data from diverse global entities, including OECD member and non-member countries, OECD accession countries, and key partner nations. Innovate data collection methods to ensure seamless and timely acquisition. 
  • Convert national data into specialized OECD formats, employing advanced analytical calculations and data manipulation techniques. Uphold data quality by ensuring relevance, accuracy, accessibility, interpretability, and coherence, resolving anomalies collaboratively with national administrations or alternative sources. 
  • Oversee statistical databases across various activities, ensuring international comparability through adept management of methodological changes. 
  • Research new data and sources to augment database coverage, contributing to continuous improvement and efficiency in data collection and processing. 
  • Foster connections with statistical experts at national and international agencies, enhancing data coverage, timeliness, and relevance. 

Analysis, Methodology, Drafting, and Documentation: 

  • Conduct data analysis, employing multivariate techniques on individual and aggregate data to report key findings. 
  • Participate in drafting and producing statistical and analytical publications/reports, contributing through graphs, tables, written content, and econometric analysis.  
  • Collaborate in refining questionnaires to enhance data coverage, timeliness, and relevance, meeting evolving user needs through ongoing statistical development. 
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation covering all production cycle aspects and relevant information, including metadata for internal and external users. 

IT Work and Other Tasks: 

  • Develop and adapt computer programs in statistical packages, contributing to technological advancements for efficient data processing. 
  • Manage and maintain databases, ensuring data dissemination readiness. 
  • Assist internal and external users with ad hoc data extraction and manipulation, facilitating interpretation for modeling, forecasting, and analysis. 
  • Formulate feature requests for IT colleagues, ensuring continuous improvement in production and utility tools.  

Statisticians Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Profile

Statisticians Key Requirements: 

  • University degree or equivalent, preferably in statistics, economics, mathematics, engineering or a scientific field, and a good knowledge of statistical databases and information technology. Advanced university degree is would be an asset. 
  • At least two years’ experience in a similar role Proven experience in economics and applied statistics 
  • Experience in the production and/or use of statistics including documentation on data sources, definitions, coverage, methodology, reliability and comparability gained in a national or international organisation. 
  • Experience in the analysis of complex macro- and micro-level data and/or knowledge in key OECD areas such as trade, health, energy, education, environment, national accounts, or transport would be an advantage. 
  • Experience in statistical concepts and applied econometric techniques. 
  • Experience in presenting statistical analysis to non-technical audiences would be an asset. 

Tools: 

  • Excellent command of Microsoft Office software, especially Excel (including macros and pivot tables). 
  • Advanced programming skills with at least one software used for statistical analysis and data visualisation (e.g. R, SAS, STATA, EVIEWS, PYTHON)). 
  • Good knowledge of large statistical databases and practical experience with statistical software to manage those databases. Solid experience working with macro-economic databases and database design would be an advantage. 

Statisticians Core Competencies: 

  • OECD staff are expected to demonstrate behaviours aligned to six core competencies which will be assessed as part of this hiring processes: Vision and Strategy (Level 1); Enable People (Level 1); Ethics and Integrity (Level 1); Collaboration and Horizontality (Level 1); Achieve Results (Level 1); Innovate and Embrace Change (Level 1).  
  • There are three possible levels for each competency. The level for each competency is determined according to the specific needs of each job role and its associated grade.

Languages: 

  • Fluency in one of the two OECD official languages (English and French) and knowledge of the other, with a commitment to reach a good working level.   

Additional Information

Contract Duration 

  • Fixed-term appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

  • Depending on level of experience, monthly salary starts at 5044.88 EUR, plus allowances based on eligibility, exempt of French income tax.

  • Please note that the appointment may be made at one grade lower in the specified job family, based on the qualifications and professional experience of the selected applicant.  

Statisticians Selection Process 

  • Assessment will include rolling application screening; online statistical test; video-recorded interviews and panel interviews with the different hiring teams are planned upon Directorates needs 
  • This vacancy is not for a specific position. Candidates who successfully pass the test will be retained in a list of candidates and will subsequently be invited for interview. When specific positions become available, retained candidates will be contacted by hiring Directorates. 
  • Only those candidates who are selected for the next stage in the selection process will be contacted.
