PhD in Climate Finance and Innovation (m / f / d) at the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology, Professorship for Public Policy for the Green Transition


The Professorship of Public Policy for the Green Transition (PPGT) focuses on designing and evaluating policies for the green transition worldwide. The group uses a variety of methods from automated data analyses (e.g. via machine learning) to qualitative analyses (e.g. via interviews) to support ambitious policies for climate and energy transitions.


This PhD in Climate Finance and Innovation position Reaching climate targets requires massive investments, which can only be provided when blending public and private sources of capital. This PhD in Climate Finance and Innovation position will leverage and expand data collected at the PPGT group to analyze investment patterns, including but not limited to VC investments in cleantech and public/private risk sharing structures of nature investments.

The goal of this PhD in Climate Finance and Innovation position is to provide policy-relevant evidence on how to accelerate investment into a range of climate-relevant sectors, including energy, transport, and food systems to enable the innovation and technology deployment necessary to reduce emissions. Conducting this work can require a broad mix of methods from analyzing large datasets to conducting interviews with investors and policymakers.

  • Passion for research and tenacity to carry through in projects
  • Master’s degree in a policy-related field (e.g., public policy, political economy, economics)
  • Analytical skills in python, R or Stata
  • Ability to work independently and curiosity to dive into new topics and learn new methods
  • Desire to work in interdisciplinary teams and communicate actively in and beyond the group
  • Motivation to have a career in research or at the interface of sustainability and policy
  • Empathy and quality to listen to and learn from others
  • Interest in nature or biodiversity, basic knowledge is a plus
  • Motivation to contribute to teaching
