Funded traineeships for young graduates at the EU Delegation to KENYA

Are you a young graduate interested in international relations? Are you curious to learn more about work of a diplomatic mission and how the EU Delegation represents EU interests and values in Kenya?

EU offer:

Funded Traineeships of up to 6 months within the following sections of the EU Delegation to Kenya, starting in July 2024 and/or October 2024:

  • Funded Traineeship in the Political, Press and Information Section (PPI):

EU Delegation to Kenya Main tasks:

  • Actively contribute to the work of the Political, Press and Information Section at the EU Delegation to Kenya
  • Under the guidance of the political adviser, follow Kenyan political trends and contribute to political reporting and analysis
  • Under the guidance of the Delegation Press and Information Officer, regularly update the Delegation’s website and social media accounts and contribute to the Delegation’s engagement with the Kenyan media
  • Support the Political, Press and Information Section in the design and layout of information material
  • Assist with press reviews
  • Prepare meetings and taking minutes
  • Fulfill other duties, as required
  • Funded Traineeship in the HoD and Trade Sections:

Main tasks:

  • Support the Head of Delegation and Deputy Head of Delegation in horizontal coordination of Delegation activities across all sectors (political affairs, press and information, economic affairs, development cooperation, administration, security)
  • Follow Kenya’s relations with third countries and analyse Kenya’s foreign policy objectives in the region
  • Monitor peace and security developments in the region and analyse Kenya’s approach to addressing them
  • Participate in meetings, take notes and draft flash reports as requested
  • Support Head of Delegation and Deputy Head of Delegation in coordination of EU Member States Embassies meetings
  • Support the Head of Trade Section on EU Economic Diplomacy initiatives in co-ordination with Member States and private sector
  • Follow issues regarding the implementation of the EPA at national level
  • Follow other agreements pertaining to trade and investment
  • Monitor the situation and track the evolution of investment and trade flows, forecasts, investment policy and legislation, fiscal policy, tax system, financial services, etc. and their possible impact on the trade relations with the EU
  • Follow up issues relating to access by EU exporters to the market of the host country
  • Fulfil other duties as required
We look for:

EU Delegation to Kenya Qualifications or special requirements:

  • Hold a university degree and have a proven interest in the field of international relations, political sciences, security, trade relations, journalism/media or other related subjects, with a particular focus on African affairs;
  • Have proven analytical, organizational, research and drafting skills;
  • Be a team player and good communicator;
  • General knowledge of the EU foreign policy priorities with a particular focus on Africa is a major advantage;
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English

Important information to read before applying

Before applying you are requested to examine the dedicated website as well as the general eligibility criteria for a paid traineeship (Article 8 of the Decision ADMIN(2017)28 – Paid traineeship).

Each selected trainee will receive a monthly grant to cover living expenses. All costs related to travels, visa, insurance, accommodation must be borne by the trainee.

Applications from non-eligible candidates will not be considered. After the evaluation of all applications, shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview. Unsuccessful candidates will be notified by email. In case the selected candidates are not able to present the required documents, their application will be rejected.

The traineeships can only be offered in compliance with the local legislation as well as the legislation of the country of origin.

Citizens from EU Member states:

  • must provide proof that they will be covered against the risk of a pandemic and the costs of repatriation;
  • must hold a relevant entrance visa and / or temporary residence permit where applicable,  based on the traineeship agreement, the duration of the traineeship, and in compliance with the local legislation.
