Contract: Two-year fixed term, possibility of renewal depending on funding.

Reporting to the News Manager (Global Campaigns), the key responsibilities for this Media Officer role include:

Delivering media for the confederation:

  • Ensure Oxfam’s teams (across the inequality campaign and Oxfam’s Washington DC Office) have appropriate media input in strategy development and the day-to-day management of media communications; 
  • Develop and deliver international media plans and products (e.g., press releases, media reactions, Q&As, etc.) in support of Oxfam’s inequality campaign and Washington DC office; 
  • Support the delivery of national/regional media work, including coordination of the work of affiliate, country and regional teams and liaison with external partners and allies; 
  • Ensure that the highest-quality media content is developed and delivered across all media channels; 
  • Support the creation and delivery of digital content relating to news; 
  • Work closely with the other members of the Media Team to ensure that content and delivery of day-today media communications are properly judged and prioritized, planned and delivered across the Confederation; 
  • Deliver media training and help prepare spokesperson for interviews; 
  • Develop competence and expertise in all channels and tools and platforms of modern media delivery;  
  • Engage and develop productive relationships with journalists working in key global media outlets including the international wires and those covering the IFIs, and contribute to the expansion of Oxfam’s journalist database; 
  • Support or act as media lead for events such as the World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings. 

Delivering confederation effectiveness and efficiency: 

  • Ensure quality control and risk management of all media and, where appropriate, social media output;  
  • Develop proactive relationships with peers and stakeholders inside Oxfam affiliates and country and regional teams, to energize, properly plan and coordinate, and jointly deliver Oxfam media output; 
  • Contribute to capacity building, training and the development of institutional processes and best practice policies, as required;
  • Contribute to monitoring, evaluation and learning to improve overall media strategy, delivery and effectiveness. 

 

Who we’re looking for

News judgement; writing and communications ability; media experience:

  • Demonstrably solid news judgement and excellent written and verbal communications skills; proven track record in journalism or media-related experience; knowledge of international media; 
  • Demonstrable competence and enthusiasm for delivering content across all media tools, channels, and platforms; 
  • Drive to achieve maximum coverage coupled with understanding and appreciation for good collaborative working processes;  
  • Ability to develop overarching media and social media strategies and messaging for key confederation-wide projects. 
  • Ability to articulate complex issues, especially economic issues, in an accessible manner, with flair and precision; 
  • Excellent spoken and written English. 

News management; dispute resolution; quality and process control:

  • Ability to liaise with a wide range of people, both internally and externally and at many levels, with credibility, tact and diplomacy; 
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills with ability to lead, influence and motivate others; 
  • Effective negotiation abilities and informal leadership skills in a multi-stakeholder, multi-cultural, network environment; 
  • Understanding of media-related reputation risk and mitigation/management; 
  • Research, monitoring and evaluation skills. 

Other/desirable: 

  • Willing to occasionally work unsocial hours; 
  • Experience in one or more countries in the Global South. 
  • Professional proficiency / fluency in another language, especially Spanish, Arabic or French.
  • Knowledge and/or experience working on IFIs.
