Introduction of the Geneva Academy:


The Geneva Academy provides postgraduate education, conducts academic legal research and policy studies, and organizes training courses and expert meetings. We concentrate on branches of international law that relates to situations of armed conflict, prolonged violence, protection of human rights and transitional justice.

The Lead Researcher role:

In close coordination with the Direction and under the supervision of the Head of Research and Policy Studies, the Lead Researcher is in charge of implementing a research project dedicated to strengthening the analysis and knowledge on the state of IHL implementation in current armed conflicts.

Lead Researcher Key responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of 5 regional researchers, coordinate and supervise their workload as per the project implementation plan;
  • Define the methodology for producing global annual reports and focused analysis on the state of international humanitarian law in contemporary conflicts with the support of an advisory group made of internationally renowned experts in IHL and humanitarian practitioners;
  • Control substance and edit the conflict classification related to analysed the conflicts (RULAC database), the global annual reports and focused reports.
  • With the support of experts, prepare the curriculum and convene training of the regional researchers on the methodology to draft reports, data collection and reporting standards, digital forensic and fact checking.

To be successful in this Lead Researcher role, you should have:

  • PhD in international law with a specialization in international humanitarian law or equivalent;
  • About 8-10 years of professional experience after PhD in the field of research in international law;
  • Strong experience in coordination projects and persons;
  • Strong methodological design skills;
  • Strong Editing skills;
  • Strong knowledge of the humanitarian sector;
  • Excellent writing skills in English (French would be an asset);
  • Excellent communication skills and capacities to coordinate different type of actors (advisory group, team of researchers and experts);
  • Experience with trainings/teaching;
  • Availability and capacity to work with activity peaks;
  • Problem-solving skills;
  • Multi-tasking;
  • Reliability and autonomy.
