Apply for the PhD Scholarships in Climate Science by the African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) at the University of Cape Town

PhD Scholarships in Climate Science Overview

The African Climate and Development Initiative (ACDI) at the University of Cape Town is offering PhD Scholarships in Climate Science and seeking two doctoral candidates to work on projects that assess the global and regional impacts and risks associated with solar radiation modification (SRM) of climate.

There is a range of topics each Doctoral Candidate could choose for their PhD dissertation based on their background, interest, and experience:
·      Heat stress and associated risks under SRM.
·      Floods in Africa’s mega-cities under SRM.
·      Impacts of SRM on groundwater.
·      The influence of SRM on the risk of ecological disruption from anthropogenic warming
·      The potential for SRM to reduce wildfire risk.
·      Marine heatwaves under SRM and implications for marine biodiversity.

Students will be part of a project funded by the Simons Foundation. The project aims to characterise the global and regional climate responses to SRM using several different injection materials and explore their implications for agriculture, biodiversity, energy, and water resources across Africa. Students will be encouraged to develop their own research ideas within the project’s goals.

The doctoral candidates will be based in the ACDI and advised by Dr Romaric C. Odoulami, along with co-supervisors drawn from the larger project team, which spans other African countries and the UK, EU, Switzerland, and USA. The PhD Candidates will be given the necessary resources for their work, including desk and office space, IT, and communication infrastructure. They may also participate in the Emerging Researcher Programme (ERP) and other supportive training for early career researchers at the University of Cape Town.

Value and duration of scholarship

● A stipend of ZAR 220,000 per year for up to three years
● Airfare from the country of origin to Cape Town
● Registration fees will be covered for up to three years.
● Support for research visits to collaborating institutions.
● Support for attendance of at least one international and one national conference during the PhD.

Academic / experience criteria

Required
● A Master’s degree (MSc, MPhil, MTech, etc) in a related discipline (e.g. climate change, atmospheric physics, agricultural sciences, physics, hydrology).
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
● Desire and ability to work in an interdisciplinary research team setting.
● Experience in handling large datasets.
● Excellent technical ability to code in R, Python, Fortran, or any other programming language for analysis.
● Experience in analysing climate data, including observation, reanalysis, and climate model (GCM and RCM) simulations and other geospatial datasets

Desired
● Experience in climate impact modelling using crop models, hydrological and/or flood models.
● Experience in giving oral presentations and a keen interest in public communication of science.
● Experience in analysing CMIP or CORDEX simulations or any other GCM/RCM simulation outputs
● Good data visualisation skills.
● Experience in analysing solar geoengineering experiments – GeoMIP, GLENS, ARISE-SAI – would be added value but is not required.
● Ability to produce peer-reviewed research articles in international journals.

How to Apply

Applicants should submit as a single PDF: (i) an application letter (2 pages maximum) that includes a description of research interests, research expertise, and suggestions for how they can work towards one of the themes listed above; (ii) a CV including a publication list; and (iii) email addresses of two references who have been directly involved in their masters research or other research related work.
